Not a character I would give up a 4 gold slot for. I can't help thinking that FFG made a mistake by not letting him search the deck or hold. This sea captains ability becomes worse when the black sails agenda is in play.

Extra draw in targ is always nice and he pairs with meraxes in a nedly way.
Im not sure I would use him in burn, but I like that he can search for any attachment, not just in house. Greyscale (tHoBaW), Longclaw (ASitD), Black Raven (ASoS) in case it gets discarded, etc. I think hes good.

He takes a card from your deck and puts it in your hand, I think that's a strong enough ability in a house with little enough draw I'd be willing to play him in every targ deck.

Yea, and without the ally trait, 4 gold is alright (wish it was either 3 gold or had a keyword, but beggars can't be choosers.)
I think you guys are really underestimating this guy. He searches for a attachment when you win a challenge that he was in, so you can trigger this multiple times. This guy + Long lances is going to get kinda nutty.....As someone who already pays 3 gold to search for a location, i'd play this guy in just about every Targ deck that runs attachments in it.

well you have to win by 4 or more? so you're including him and others, and with out stealth opponents can see what your doing, so chump blocking to keep you from that 4 mark is expected.....idk, i'd rather have Ser Barristan Selmy (TftH) over Groleo any day. Unless targ gets some captain support.

I'm still not 100% sure how naval support works, but if your opponent goes unopposed do you still have an action to bring him in to the challenge?

Yup. :)

Yeah, because you know, he totally isn't in a house that can BURN their chump blocking character to death......Sorry, its just that he doesn't need stealth or anything. Think about the house he is in. Go ahead, block him with a chump blocker and then watch that chump blocker die to a Incinerate. Now you win your challenge, go search for a Flame Kissed, attack on a military challenge, after you opponent defends, you burn their claim soak with the Flame Kissed that you just got. I don't see how you can say he isn't that good when he is in a house that can do that pretty easily every turn.....Besides, you could just as easily win a military challenge, put Khal into play, attack power, stealth a character, jump him in after defenders are declared if any at this point. Thats still 6 str coming on a power challenge.
The ability is strong, but when you look at decks where you would place him it gets problematic. KotHH depending on a build if I have gone charlite I don't see myself ever playing him as he needs a friend to join him for a challenge for his ability to hit off. In summer I can use Red Warlock which is a lot better for just fetching attachment, I only see myself playing this as a back up card for finding another black raven, but that is iffy as a Targ I should be winning the season war if there is winter deck. Maesters I don't have a single maester build where I could place this one, the decks are usually top heavy already and usually they have the draw needed to draw cap every turn unlike other Targs. The ability is good, but it is really hard to justify playing him. In pure burn he shines the most. He also has bad anti-synergy with black sails if that ever comes a thing.
And again, i'd play him in KOTHH Targ because it has ways to get those characters in play with him. It really isn't hard to get him a second body to swing with when you have 2 resources to use. Let alone, it is targ, there is Ambush From The Planes as well. I know if i was actually in the mood to rebuild targ KOTHH, i'd find room for him. I could really see a reason for playing him in a Shadows KOTHH burn deck. Getting things like Dragon Skull and Flame Kissed. Seems pretty good for me. Especially when your playing characters like Sorrowful man. There is your second character and you get deadly off of it.
If Groleo didn't have to participate in the challenge himself, and triggered just off winning by 4 STR, I'd maybe give him more benefit of the doubt. But as it stands, he's the perfect target for challenge control, and lacks both a surprise factor (Ambush) and raw stats I'd be looking for.

Not that I'd say that he's a bad card, just that he's in tough competition. Honestly, for a burn deck at the 4g slot I'd much rather run: Viserion (QoD), The Brazen Beasts (ARotD), Daenerys Targaryen (GotC) or even Company of the Cat (THoBaW) for that matter.

Why? Since they all help mitigate some of the deck's weaknesses, and also bring better stats to the board.
  • Viserion helps with the lack of location control
  • Brazen Beasts help with the deck being slow (all burn, but especially KotHH decks)
  • Dany gives you a 4-STR intrigue (burn decks need to be careful to have enough intrigue, losing your hand just won't do) icon with renown and helps your Street Waif (AToT) stay alive through Threat from the North (PotS)
  • the Company gives you a 4-STR intrigue icon as a surprise + a card pretty much guaranteed (instead of having to rely on your opponent not being able to control the challenge to not be a 4 STR win).
Honestly, the reason Ser Barristan Selmy (TftH) isn't run that much in Joust, is that he's pretty easy to control and Burn is too resource-tight to run many 4g's. I don't see how that's much different for Groleo?

If there's one thing about Groleo that I don't like, it is the complete anti-synergy with Black Sails. Do the math: Start with a 60 card deck, split it in two. Now, 7 cards in hand + 4 cards for setup + 2 cards for draw on first turn. That leaves you with... 17 cards in your draw deck. Assuming that you have 10% attachments in your deck (6 out of 60), you'd have on average 1-2 attachments left in your draw deck the moment you first could possibly trigger Groleo. Not much to choose from... And that's assuming you drew into him first turn. This will not get much better by increasing deck size, since you will have to be extra careful with not having too many setup cards.

Really, if pushing 4 STR challenges was easy for Burn in KotHH, I'd still run Flaming-Pitch Tower (TWot5K) instead, since it can hit those hard-to-burn (No attachments + high STR) targets.

I'm looking forward to experimenting with Captain Groleo (RotK). I think getting +STR on challenges won't be a problem with his Naval Enhancement. I always feature a bit of Burn no matter what deck type I am using. It'd be great for my Dothraki deck, which features the Aggo's Bow (RoR), Jhogo's Whip (OSaS), Rakharo's Arakh (IG) and a couple of other decent attachments. Being able to get these attachments out as needed would be extremely powerful.
.
@Smiffsta I have been doing exactly that with him and it is very nice to pull what you need when you need it.

I am unclear though, do you have to reveal the attachment? The card doesn't say you do, but that opens a weird door in competetive play if you have to take someone's word in a big tournament. I would assume you have to reveal.
This comes from FAQ, page 24

Any time a player searches his or her deck
for a card of a specific type, that player must
reveal the found card to his or her opponent(s),
to verify that it falls under the search
parameters.

Sounds perfectly reasonable, thanks!
