Well, you would remove the dupe to save him from being killed, so then his text wouldn't apply.

In Aloof and Apart, does his text prevent him from getting the prized keyword when killed?

No. He is still "killed," no matter where you place the card when you take it off the table. Since he is still "killed," passives and responses to him being killed (including Prized) would occur.

So the "instead" statement is more so responding to the unprinted text of putting him in the dead pile since that's where killed cards go?
