May I discard DarkStar(PotS) to both save character & put him into play?
You sure can.

Do note that if the effect you are saving from is Valar Morghulis (Core), then you will also need to save Darkstar, because he will be in play when Valar resolves.
Darkstar wasn't there at initiation, so can't be saved from Valar if put into play in this way.

Can't be saved or doesn't need to be saved?

neither. the faq states if a card enters play after initiation but before resolution of a non-targeted effect, then that character may be effected by the effect. regardless of being present during initiation, darkstar is indeed put into play beefore VM resolves. this is still during step 2, where you are allowed to trigger saves/cancels to the effect. and since Darkstar is eligible to die and we are still in step 2, he is eligible to be saved.

at least, thats how i remember the thread ending on the ffg forums. might want to double check me.
Thx for quick answers =)

The short answer is don't discard Darkstar as part of the cost of Master of the Sun during Valar.

There is 1 scenario where you could benefit from it. Assuming you drew cards after your last marshalling phase, and have a Darkstar in hand and 1 in play. You could use the MotS to save himself by discarding the Darkstar in hand, which would come into play as a dupe. Then you could discard the dupe to save your Darkstar.

Here is a note on the save/passives timing:

Assuming you have lost a MIL challenge, you can pick your character to die from claim, then kneel MotS (and discard a card) to save that character. Then during Step 4 you would get to stand back up for vengeful.

However, if you are saving a character from a kill event, such as Die by the Sword (LoW), since this is played during Step 5 Responses, you would not get to re-stand for vengeful as Step 4 has already passed.

Determine Winner of Challenge (framework action)
-- Step 1, 2 & 3

Challenge Result is Implemented (framework action)
-- Step 1 Initiation of Claim: character chosen for claim
-- Step 2 Save/Cancel: kneel MotS and discard a card to save that character
-- Step 3 Resolution of Claim: character was successfully saved

Reward for Unopposed Challenge is Awarded (framework action)
-- Step 1, 2 & 3

Renown is awarded (framework action)
-- Step 1, 2 & 3

-- Step 4 Passives: among other passives, MotS stands for Vengeful
-- Step 5 Responses: opponent plays Die By the Sword
-- -- Step 1.5.1 Initiation of Event: Play event & choose target
-- -- Step 2.5.1 Save/Cancel of Event: Kneel MotS (and discard a card) to save target character
-- -- Step 3.5.1 Resolution of Event: Event resolves but character was saved
-- -- Repeat Steps 1.5.x - 3.5.x for each response triggered
-- Step 6 End of Action: any moribund cards leave play
