How many uniques do most Targ players actually get out? I imagine the most common are Dragon decks, although I don't know how many Dothroki decks get out, and burn probably wouldn't use such a card.
Renown and a War crest is nice, but will the Intrigue icon do much? Would a deck that wants to run this be running the Heir agenda?
I also know there is a big discussion on the FFG boards about the Reponse, as you have to keep the discard pile in the same order, so what is the best way to do it?
In an army/war crest deck, is defenitely a good addition (I know those decks don't have many uniques, but the ability is worth paying 6 gold for this. Plus, plaza of purification and the new pyramid help to put this card on the table.
Unless you have Bloodrider (MotA) in hand to cancel that triggered character ability.
Then there's Dissension (QoD) which can be canceled with Paper Shield (QoD).
The real worry is Ser Jorah Mormont (WLL). He can't be canceled.
No matter what card you play, there's a card that can ruin your day. Knight's aren't even safe anymore because of Daario Naharis (WLL).
But really I'm just gushing over this guy since I just won a 3-player melee tonight thanks to their renown!
Viserys and Aemon are rarely run, IMO. Dany fits in some builds, not in others. The Dragons only really go in a Dragon deck (though the Hatchlings are good for cheap uniques and the Golden Company may boost their play). Daario and Jorah are typically run, yes. And a Khal Drogo....so I'd say 3 uniques are autoincludes with maybe 5 more on the high end depending on deck type. You can feasibly see a burn deck with only non-uniques.....but if you're trying to drop this guy in you can put Viserys, Brown Ben, Hatchlings, etc. as your weenies to make him cheaper. I'd say a good balance for cost. Like doulos2k says, the lack of power icon makes him all the more tricky in an Heir deck and the Mercenary keyword makes him vulnerable to generic hate like Dissension. A well-done card, IMO.
I run a Targ army deck as my 3rd deck and yes i dont have many uniques in there... only dany and the uniques with war crests but who cares? targs have a fair few martialling locations which will be put to use to get this guy out for free anyways.
plus all the effects which either stand or prevent armys from kneeling make this a super power card.
run them with The Power of Arms (Core) and Daenerys Targaryen (GotC) and they are str 10 on their own
Seriously though...how does the "random" card returning to your hand officially get determined in tournament play? Also, if you are running Aloof And Apart and the randomly determined card is a cost 4 or higher character, what happens? Since it isn't a valid target, does the effect simply fizzle?
There is no "official" instruction for how to determine anything randomly, in tournament play or otherwise. It's up to the players. If your method of randomization changes the order of your discard pile, then the "golden rule" applies. (The card text telling you to do something randomly takes precedence over the rule saying not to change the order of your discard pile.) Also, Aloof and Apart's prohibition on returning cards to hand only applies to cards that are in play. Like everything else, unless it specifically says it works on cards in the discard pile, it doesn't.
This might be an obvious answer, but i'm going to ask anyway. What if there is only 1 card your discard pile? Does "random" imply that you have to have 2 or more?
No. "Random" only refers to the method for choosing which card comes out of your discard pile. It does not place any limitations on the state of your discard pile before making that choice.
What happens if you use Ambush from the plain with this card? let's imagine you have nothing at this point in your discard card, can you just attack with the Golden company and immediately get Ambush from the plain back in your hand?
Yes. You will get the one card in your discard pile back in your hand.
If there is only 1 card in your discard pile, any method of "randomly" returning a card from your discard pile to your hand is going to pull that card. Predictable results when applied to a small set (i.e., 1 card in your discard pile) doesn't stop random selection.
Put it in perspective: When a player loses an INT challenge, he is supposed to discard a card at random from his hand. Are players with exactly 1 card in hand effectively exempt from INT claim, or do they "randomly" lose the only card they have to lose? Same thing here with only 1 card in your discard pile.
I understand that, but I didn't formulate the question as I should have.
My question is: when does Ambush from the plains go to the discard card? How do you know, in general, when an event card goes in the discard pile? As soon as you play it? When the effect is over?
To give a simple exemple, let's say I use nightmares during the challenge phase, and that I have no cards in the discard pile. I then decide to attack with the Golden Company. is nightmares already in the discard pile, meaning that I can get it back and immediately play it again, or is it still considered to be in the board since its effect is not over?
Event cards go to the discard pile at the end of the action window in which they are played (unless something specifically says otherwise - like with Epic Battle events). You do not have to wait for a lasting effect to completely resolve (or become inactive) before putting them in the discard pile.
If you play an event in the challenge phase, its action window is going to have to close before you get to resolving the challenge (and ultimately triggering the Response on Golden Company). So the event will always be in the discard pile before you can trigger the response.
