Can someone explain the strength of this character? In my (albeit narrow) experience, Stark has the fewest chump characters to sacrifice on this effect, and other houses have more saves. So I don't really get it, but I see decks now and then by "high-end" players using it.
I've seen some stark decks put it to good use. Usually with some Stalwart character or saves like Aemon or Nymeria.
There was a time i used to put this card in my deck, i'll explain the way: I put in play a card like Hungry Mob with Icy Catapult; then i put this card, so i can kill 2 opponent's characters. It is not the best card, of course..but i have to say that it was very useful sometimes ;)
If you had Lucas Blackwood in play then play Umber Berserkers, you kill Blackwood then opposing character then intiate a military challenge killing whatever your claim is in the marshal phase.

But if you have Lucas Blackwood with Icy catapult and you play this to kill Lucas, could you use the effect of the catapult?
Yep, definately an interesting combo leading to plenty of death and destruction.
Stick in Narrow Escape and play it in the first action window of the challenge started by Blackwood, before your opponent's characters start dying..

Can an opponent choose warf rats or Beric to "be killed"? I would guess no, given their interactions with Field Spikes. kkktttooommmmm
No they can't. If something is can not be killed then they also can not be chosen as the target of a kill effect. Much like you can't use Die by the Sword on either of those characters.
Do they have to be killed if they are only controlled character? Is it some difference between "when" and "after comes into play"?
No difference. Just inconsistent wording. If you lay them out as your only character, they kill themselves.
When my opponent use Rhaenys's Hill (TBoBB) to take control of my dead berserkers, would the berserkers' killing effect apply?
Yup, any time they enter play for any reason the effect applies. One reason this card synergises perfectly with The Kindly Man (VM).
Is anyone sure about this card. The wording suggest the choosing and killing are 2 separate actions being in 2 separate phrases (as opposed to Die by the sword or No Quarter.. etc) ....so why not be able to choose a target that can't be killed ?

You are parsing the effect out to much. The entire effect is choosing characters and killing those characters. Now, if it was a "then, kill" it would be similar to
The Red Wedding (PotS) where the first part of the effect is to choose characters. THEN you attempt to kill one and give the other power.

Their ability doesn't trigger in setup does it?

No, nothing triggers on setup.

Does the effect of this card works when one of the players in melee game don't have any characters?
