Opposing characters? It means participating characters? If he wins a challenge alone and the opponent has 7 characters in play , he claims 7 power even if the participating defender is one for example?
It means participating characters used by the opponent.

Are you sure? Why does it write opposing and not participating???
It's the way FFG decided to write it.

It's shorter than saying "for each of the defending player's participating characters"

An opposing character is clearly participating - otherwise it isn't opposing, it is just hanging out on the opponent's side of the table.

ok, and he claims 1 power wright? Not the winner's house.

Correct. The power (as many as apply to the condition of "opposing characters") goes on Arrogant Contender, not the owner's house card.

Correct. He gets 1 power for each character that was defending the challenge against him.
