Hm. At which point do I have to have the participating War character? At any point of the challenge (even if it was removed from the challenge before it resolved), when I win the challenge or when I play the event? I'm guessing not the first, but I'm unsure about the latter two.

Can you give any example how a character might have or not have the icon during a challenge?

The wording of "win a challenge in which you have at least 1 participating war crest character" indicates you need to have a war crest character as the time the challenge winner is determined.

If you started with a war crest character and they were removed from the challenge, they are no longer participating, they had participated, but that doesn't exactly count.
The quirky situation I'm thinking about is if DbtS can be played if I had a War character in the challenge when I won the challenge, but if I don't still has it when the framework window for player responses comes (or if another player did something as a response before me to remove it). Let's say I won a as defender, but my only War crest defender was killed for deadly.

I do however realize now that the War crest character would still be in moribund state - and I'm also guessing that the character then still counts as participating. Making my scenario impossible to occur. Correct?

pretty much, yea. that's why I was curious how you thought it might happen.
In a military challenge the "order of dieing" is in this case: Claim - Deadly - Die by the Sword (LoW), right?
Yes. Claim first, then passives (including Deadly), then triggered responses (including Die by the Sword).
