This is a great card for freeing up dupes and attachments that save only that specific character. This is only a bad idea when your deck relies heavily on Renown chars that get loaded up with Power tokens.

So for example if I have a unique character (x) in play and also a dupe attached to it. If I lose a military battle and lose the dupe, then the character is killed in the next round once I use maegi's promise to return character x to my hand, even though there is still one dead character x in my dead pile am I able to play character x again?

The dupe is discarded as a cost to save the character from being killed. It does not go to the dead pile. So there that character is not in your dead pile until they are killed later on. Then you can use Magi's Promise to get them out of the dead pile. In this scenario you should be able to play them again. Remember, the dupe went to the discard pile.

Same question about A and A. Can if it is over 4 cost can it come back to my hand?
