If you were to kill the character and then save him, would that remove the discard effect? Example I use iron mines after not declaring a challenge to prevent the death, does that also prevent the discard due to the word and?

And means both things happen.

*Then* would mean the first thing happens, THEN if it was succesful (in this example, if he actually died) the second thing happens.

 

In this case, saving him would not prevent the discard since "AND" is used as opposed to "THEN".

That said, this will never be an issue because you cannot save him since the kill/discard effect happens at the end of the phase. There is an entry in the FAQ that says no responses (including cancels and saves) can be triggered when a phase is ending.
