Having a hard time seeing how this reaction is useful...anyone use it for any sort of impact?
I have used it to draw, but I have to give them a card that might hurt me...so I only trigger if I can give them a dead unique or dupes of location/attachments. But even then, that might comes with a price...the Iron price.
You can use it in synergy with other effects which are related to opponent's hand. Like Crone of Vaes Dothrak or Heads on Spikes. Or as you pointed out, to draw and give nothing but a dead card to your opponent.
Also any Pillage is kinda useful for GJ as they have other benefits from opponent's discard pile - Euron, Iron Islands Market...
but his Reaction is working against this synergy, and for pillage alone he is too expensive
The reaction is optional, so obviously you won't trigger it if it doesn't benefit you. I think that was the whole point of this card.
Good points. Thanks for responding. Nice ability, but with current cards a little disappointing, I am sure there will be a killer combo soon. Mission pillage continues...
heh I maybe play a role of devil's advocate here but sure as hell I'm not a GJ cards salesman
But for the sake of argument, I did a short analysis on how Nute the Barber can fit. Currently GJ has only 4 characters with Pillage. That's not that much so Nute can be used as just another means of pillaging. He's also Ironborn - which means he can use King of Salt and Rock, Throwing Axe, he can be brought back from Dead Pile with Aeron, you can Bless him with Salt and he is unique so can be duped for free (for Valar purposes f.e.). Also he's loyal, which means cost 4 with Fealty. And as a cost 5 he can be used in decks running Duel, Valar Dohaeris or Winter agenda with claim 2 plots.
He can synergize also with upcoming Tris Botley as another means of pillage, while having an ability to draw a card if needed as well. GJ doesn't have any characters with insight. Nute can provide that and not only when he's participating but with any pillage played. That's 3 draw potential although with a price of giving opponent a card as well.
He maybe not the best characters around but I think people will play him.
that was a pretty good sales pitch. I just realized there is potential to get 3 cards from this guy. even though you may have to give some to your opponent, but still you can choose the cards or when not to trigger. his name sucks tho, but I definitely see him as a good card now.
I've found he is also good for:
1) Loading someone's hand with characters ready for Heads on Spikes next turn
2) As a counter to Flea Bottom you can remove those characters that bounce back-and-forth, for a turn/full gold cost
If you're playing a GJ-Lion mill deck, Without His Beard requires your opponent to have cards in hand in order to trigger. In the case your opponent has no cards in hand you could use Nute's reaction to give them one first.
