Good for Nights Watch, obviously, with their focus on defense. And he seems pretty easy to get in via his effect.

And he introduces some interesting head-games since now opponents are going to have to wonder if you are keeping 4 gold--are you sitting on him to try and get him out at a discount or trying to bluff your way out of a military challenge.

I don't get him. MIL is not the icon my Watchers need, and his Reaction, while good is not going to win me games (or even challanges). 4 gold to save up is too much for a faction that has few means to get them outside plot/marshalling phase. People will just consider a +4 extra strenght on their MIL challange when they had the gold saved up. They can even randomly discard him with a INT challange win before he can hit the board, making the saved gold useless.

Maybe using Martell's In Doran's Name could have been a great way to ambush him by surprise, but since that also requires a faction kneel, it's not going to happen.

I think that he will be quite good in Watch banner of the Lion because of Tyrion. Agains some houses like Greyjoy it could be also good to add some icons even on Ravens, Stewards or Samwell. And perhaps in the future it will be possible to run Watch decks with more good characters without military icon. In such a decks he will be even better than for example Syrio.

Regarding what xchan said. I feel like Thorne slides well into a Watch/Lion deck since you'd have Tyrion to help pay for his reaction. He also helps vs Nymeria since he can cover some of your stronger characters, like Ranging Party, from losing their Mil icon. Another thought I've had is he may be the first of a few Watch characters that give your other Watch characters icons.

I think he is really good anti-Greyjoy tech. Putting out so many mil icons that they can't stealth them all. Given how much trouble NW has against Greyjoy, I'd say he is worth one or two copies in a Fealty NW deck. Unfortunately, he doesn't help against Balon, but he does allow you to save a Milk for him instead of hitting Asha or Theon.

Tyron might make his ambush easier to pull, but Nymeria will still prevent you from doing a MIL challange on your attacking phase. I understand that NW only wants to defend, but stalling against Martells doesn't seem a great idea to me.

Your second thought seems interesting though. A rangers deck with anti stealth from Benjen and multiple icons from other iconic Rangers while defending might be what the NW need to defend the Wall without help. I hope future cards follow the trend you suggested because I love NW, just not their cards so far.

Well, GJ can just go for uo POW challange instead if the see the gold saved up and no means to oppose all the NW. Once an uo goes through, the Wall is knealt. I think Benjen is a better anti-Greyjoy tech than Alliser. I would play him over Alliser almost allways.

I would never play Alliser over Benjen, but I don't always draw Benjen.

Yay, now ravens can fight!

I've been disappointed with how disappointed I am with this card.

I've never been willing to save 4 gold to maybe, perhaps, possibly play this card.

I just know my opponent will skip military that turn.

4 gold is way too much to ever bluff.

So, how many people have actually used that reaction?

Hi Joe,

I've used it twice , out of 2 times that I decided to save the gold, once it saved my bacon, the other time it just gave me a bunch of cool str 2 mil icon ravens to defend with
I think people will catch on, but right now I don't think people expect it

Use Marching Orders and play out 5 gold of characters.  Make it look like they were the only characters in hand.  Ambush Alliser in the Challenges phase.   Profit!

Or make some form nof Nw/Lannister build and use Tyrions gold to pay for him.

I think his biggest potential is likely to be in a Stewards here to serve deck.

Probably 1 steward short at the moment, but as well as fealty/crossing, it's possible to make this deck bannering in either wolf or lion.

Can You play treachery on him ? And what happens then ?

You can play Treachery when someone triggers the reaction. It will leave Thorne in that player's hand, but they won't be able to pay the cost on his ability again any time soon.

He gives himself an icon as well, correct? So Namibia could took his Military icon and still leave him one while defending?

*Nymeria, even.

Yep, He has one from himself, he gains another with his ability so if nymeria takes one he still has one left.
