I guess the advantage for Hama is that you can use him for questing and then, during combat, readying him to chump block?

It gets better than that: Hama can block twice with 5 defense

There is an action window after shadow cards are revealed but before combat resolves.

1) exhaust Hama to block

2) reveal shadow card

3) Will Hama survive without using his action?

3a) yes; do not ready, keep Hama around for another day

3b) no; ready Hama, improve defense, he survives

4) block with Hama a second time before he leaves play at the end of the phase.

The true strength is that you don't have to discard him like a good amount of other rohan allies. He has very solid stats at 3 cost (2 attack for Spirit is often needed as well) and haves an ability that may save you late game.

OK, I get it : it's a specific and secondary combat action that you can trigger after you used him to defend once.  Wow. That's quite amazing for a Spirit character!...

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it.

also before he leaves play beacuse of his effect and after he defended twice you can discard him for one of the Rohan events (like ride to ruin) to triple use

Or use Born aloft to save him back to your hand before his mandatory discard.

Or use Born aloft to save him back to your hand before his mandatory discard.

Probably just better to use Gamling.

People said you can block twice, and I didnt understand.  Thanks for listing the procedure out, because now that I see it put in steps my eyes popped out of my head!

If a put Hama into play via sneak attack and use his ability: is he discarded or does he return to my hand?

Whichever you prefer. Since both effects have the same timing point, you can choose which one to resolve first; the other won't be able to resolve because, when you go to resolve it, Hama is no longer in play and neither effect explicitly says it could affect Hama if he's out of play.
