Useful ability, but his one hitpoint is keeping me from using it, since you cannot respond to The Necromancer's Reach (Core) and the like, so you just lose it.
I'm pretty sure it means discard from hand, not from play. Or am I wrong?

I'm afraid you are. Unless it says from your hand, you have to discard from play. Sadly, LoTR LCG does not have a "sacrifice" wording, which makes things a bit confusing.
Page 10 of the rulebook: "Whenever a card is discarded, it goes to the discard pile belonging to the card's originating deck"

And it has to be in play, yes.

Used this to great effect to beat The Dead Marshes for the first time.

I'm a huge fan of cards that are discard without exhausting.  You get to use their abilities and use him in the same turn.  Great synergy with the Horn of Gondor.

Great synergy with the Horn of Gondor.

It doesn't. The horn has an errata, the card has to be destroyed, not discarded.
