Im assuming "defends an attack" means exhausts to defend- ie if I use Small Target to redirect the attack, I can still use this to ready & boost my her?. Unless someplace "defends an attack" is more clearly defined as receiving the damage (ie blocking, being wounded, etc)?
I think these are two different things. Small target says "exhausts to defend". So that is just a response to the declaration of you defending, but you haven't defended it yet. The effects of Small Target take place. IF the shadow card has a shadow effect and you "resolve this attack as normal" then you will compare their attack vs your defense and assign any damage as necessary. Then, you can play Taste it Again! in response because your character has defended an attack.
Small Target is a response to you declaring a defender. Taste it again is in response to actually defending it (resolving their attack against that hero).
