I think I underestimated this card. Both the focus and hand destruction aspects are absolutely savage.
I say yes because the Reaction states the opponent must choose between one of two options. If one option isn't present then the other is picked by default.
If the dark side player does not defend he has no defending units. He doesn't have to discard two cards to avoid a non-existent threat.
It doesn't rely on the dark side player defending, only that Ezra is focused to strike.
