I recently received a rules clarification as to the usage of this objective's ability from Nate at FFG. The question was whether you needed to have a card in your hand to use this ability. Below is his response:

"When you would place a card into an edge stack..." is a triggering condition, and refers to a timing point in the game, and not to a player's capability to place a card. You may use the effect if you have no cards remaining in hand.
So does this mean you can play this effect even if you DO have cards in hand? I see no comma in his response sentence, so I would think it works either way
That's the whole point of the objective, to win edge battles while keeping card advantage. So, yes.

To me this isn't my favorite objective type just a gamble.

Does it not allow you to look first? The way it is worded leaves room for looking first and the not placing that card.

Nope. You *may* look AND play. Basically, you can choose whether you want to look at the top card or not, but once you do, you're forced to play it as well.

Would have been better if you weren't forced to play the card.

Of course, but thematically, Smugglers are supposed to be about gambling, so it makes sense it works like this.

This may be one of the sets that most strongly reflect that nature, as the low edge count and some inconsistencies make it high-risk, but with high-rewards in the objective, Col Serra and Don't Get Cocky.

The killer to this set is you want to win edge with units like Col Serra, yet it has an abysmally low edge count and the risk, IMO, isn't worth the reward as you will inevitably lose good units and other good cards, and still might not win edge. This is a bad gamble. Gamor run, for instance, is a good gamble by comparison, IMO.

Agreed, which just shows how poor design was in many sets through the Hoth Cycle.

exactly, i certainly won't be sad when hoth cycles out, i will however be excited to see a hoth cycle re-done at a more consistently higher power level as i do like hoth vehicles and the theme a lot.
