This character is just great for any Martell melee deck.
It could be brilliant card, not bad ability and stats, useful keywords. This would be ok for 4 gold and even then it would be a little overpriced as ability does not discard random card so is much much weaker than intrigue challenge. At lease for 4 gold he will see play quite often. Giving him 5 is equal to adding can't not be included in decks. Characters for 4 gold are very strong and solid look to Aero Hotah, Ariennne, Darkstar. For 5 gold we should get someone as good as Red Viper and Doran is much weaker. Even in melee is difficult to justify him for this price. He's effect is better as affect more players but we are potential target of more players as well. For me another not playable Doran.
for 5 gold, he should have at least 4 strenght, in this current form, he is expensive. By the way a martell with the noble crest is a very rare beast, we must be happy to have one.
I like this guy for a melee deck, I doubt he'll make it into a joust deck though.
His ability is very useful. alot of times i get my opponent saying "one of theses 2 cards in my hand i dont care about". So if they are forced to get rid of their worst card it leaves your intrigue challenge all the more important. since you would be able to get rid of the card he doesnt want to lose.
His cost is high. Not sure i would put in my deck, if he was a 4 cost or 4 str i would for sure.

insane that peopelk think this should be 4 gold, at 4 gold this card is imba
I don't think so at all. At least it only works when you lose on defense. Plus its on a unique character. I am ok with him costing 5, but he'd actually be good at 4. Not broken though. Look at Taste for Blood (PotS). That card is much much stronger, imo. Even if Doran did cost 4.

Digging up an old discussion but I think this card is priced right when you consider the Martell library as a whole. This version of Doran + The Brimstone (TBC) is a very potent combination; especially in melee games.

The Brimstone is actually much stronger in melee than i previously thought, even without Doran the ability to remove 1- 5 icons from opponents characters before you even go is huge
The Brimstone is excellent in melee.

Doran, however, is just asking for your 5 gold investment (that doesn't even have renown) to be focus fired because he hurts everyone.
