I just saw this character in action today, and we were confronted with a puzzle: I won an unopposed ch. with BC and the opponent (Baratheon deck) played the ''Lord of light, protect us'' event card, which reads:

''Response: Kneel an Asshai character to choose a character that just triggered its ability. Cancel the effects of that ability. Then, if you control at least 3 Asshai characters, you may return the chosen character to its owner's hand.''

He knelt an Asshai character, and was alreardy controlling more than 3 Asshais, so far so good. What happens next? Is the effect of BC triggered or not, since it is returned to my hand? In other words, is there a time window after the 'Challenge result is implemented' step of teh framework reaction window for the opponent to cancel the discarding of 2 cards from his deck with this event card?

We decided to accept the Baratheon's event card and not to trigger the BC's effect after it returned to my hand. Was this the right way to play it?

Well, if the Bara card reads:
"to choose a character that just triggered its ability. Cancel the effects of that ability." then... :

You won unopposed and chose to trigger the ability of your BC, right? (by saying: "I want to trigger my response.")
The bara card clearly states that this response is canceled. Therefore you played it right. But remember:
the ability was canceled by the Bara card. So the "returning to your hand" had nothing to do with it. ;)

Schnaki is right.

Basically, the order of play would be:

Win unopposed challenge with BC

Trigger BC's Response

Bara player plays Lord of Light, Protect Us and kneels and Asshai character (BC's ability is cancelled so no cards are discarded.)

Then count up the number of Asshai characters controlled by the Bara player.

If more than 3, then BC is returned to hand.

The bit in italics only takes effect if the cancel is successful, If the cancel was cancelled then BC wouldn't be returned to hand.

It's so confusing with the ''window-within-window'' cancels and response opportunities. What's bugging me is this:

For the Bara player was a matter of ''saving'' his event card from being discarded as an intrigue claim. Since I won with BC an unopposed intrigue challenge, should I resolve it and discard a card from the Bara's hand, with a possibility of discarding that event (''Lord of Light...''), or were we right to accept the playing of that event? I mean, what comes first, the resolution of a challenge, or the triggering of a response (Here: BC's response-->then the cancel with the event card-->then, the BC's returning to my hand)? I have studied the FAQs but I cannot find out the solution for this specific one.

Determine challenge winner

Save/Cancels of the challenge determination (Misinformation for example.  NOT   cancels like Lord of Light, Protect Us which trigger off character abilities))

Claim (discard the card from hand for Intrigue claim)

Passives (so card text that does not have bold text before it that has to resolve when the condition is met)

Responses (this is where BC's ability kicks in, which then gives your opponent the opportunity to cancel it)

It can get quite complicated but hopefully the Second Edition will make it easier to get to grips with!

My advice is read the FAQ timing structure section properly and try to work out examples using the cards you've got.  It helps!

What it comes down to is this:

There are 5 parts to resolving a challenge:

1. Determine Winner

2. Settle Claim

3. Award Unopposed

4. Award Renown

5. Resolve Deadly

You can use appropriate save/cancel effects to each when they happen, but you cannot use Response effects (other than save/cancel effects) to any of them until all of them have been resolved.

That means that even though the response opportunity for BC is created in #1 (determining the winner), you can't actually trigger his response until the entire challenge is resolved -- after #5. And, of course, Lord of Light... cannot attempt to cancel BC's response until after it has been triggered.
