Am I missing something awesome about this card? Or was this an April Fool's joke on Martell? I guess you could put this on the "kill everyone" Viper, but really?
I am confused by this card as well. Seems rather costly, when you can use Paper Shield to cancel many kinds of events. During summer, it seems a little better since you get a draw out of it too, but it costs 1 gold. I just don't get it.
Put it on
Lucas Blackwood (GotC) or as mentioned before The Red Viper (TftRK), and your oppenent musk think twice to play an event
This can only be attached to a Martell character so Lucas doesn't work. The chances of you running TRV from KLE rather than PoS just for this seems highly improbable.

Yep. This is a below average card. Paper shield and he calls it thinking are both, generally, superior options.
We are talking about two different things here. Paper shield and like are surprise effects. this one is a constant that gives you the option to choose. Any player would think twice playing events, if all his/her characters can die in response.

I have a question about the "cost" part of this card. If you attach it to
Maester of the Sun (ASoS) while it is summer, and someone plays an event card- what happens?

Bronze shield states kill attached character (doesn't state it can't be saved) to cancel the effects of that event. Then draw the card.
If the maester kneels and saves himself, is the cost paid for? Or does the save effectively cancel the kill so nothing happens? Thanks!

He canceled the kill so the cost was not paid for.

Kinda thought that was the way of things. Thanks!
Paying costs is step 1, and saving is in step 2, so you are already dead by the time you can try and save. So technically, all costs of discard/kill are cannot be saved effects. But they only put it on some cards and not others, leading to the misunderstanding that you can try and save against the cost being paid.

Shouldn't there be a new series of steps to respond to a death, and wouldn't that series of steps get worked through before the first action finished?

The trouble with cost is it is the initiation of the effect, so I believe NuFenix is right, there isn't a subset of save/cancels to paying the cost. There is only a save/cancel of the effect, which the cost is still paid on.

So if you have to discard or kill a character to pay for an effect, there is not an opportunity to save from the cost. Even if there was, then since the cost was not paid the effect does not resolve.
Could still be interesting to be able to save against paid costs, since this would at occasions make players able to save opponents' characters being killed to pay for effects to interrupt the cost - especially if the effect has any other additional costs which then are wasted :)

It's beneficial if you're playing
Alchemist's Shop (OSaS)
Also, the opponent will see it coming, so it will prevent them
from playing events. Furthermore, you can combo it with

Blood for Blood (PotS)
and Bam! Typical Martell bamboozlement!
