I thought of something here. If an opponent has a unique character in play and a copy of that card in the discard pile. What would happen if you move the copy of the discarded card into the dead pile? Since that card is now illegally in play, would it automatically be discarded?
No. However, if you were to afterwards bounce that character into hand (say, via The First Snow of Winter (ODG)), then they couldn't play the character again.

Essentially, the rules regarding uniques and dead-pile only limit playing (or putting into play) of cards, but don't do anything to cards that are already in play.
Yeah, as Drakey said, having a character in play and in the dead pile isn't an illegal play state, the rules say nothing about that - they only say that you can't play (or put into play) a unique character that's already in your dead pile.

As an additional point to that, if you had a copy of a character in play, one got moved into the dead pile, AND you had the third copy in your hand, you could still play the duplicate copy on the character in play, because you're playing a duplicate rather than playing the character.

Are you sure? I thought you were playing the character until it entered play at which point it immediately became a duplicate.
Huh, I could've sworn that having wondered this previously I'd asked on the FFG forums and had that answer ktom'd into me, but upon searching for said topic I've only found one in which he said the opposite. So I guess I'm wrong after all. Weird that I somehow got the exact opposite impression somewhere along the road though. Oh well.

EDIT:

In this topic ktom suggests you can play a dupe, but in this topic he suggests otherwise. I'll post up a clarification topic and hopefully we can get a decision which I can post here.
