If he is killed but there is a duplicate, does his response still happen?
No, if you save someone from being killed then they're not killed, so any response based on them being killed can't happen. There are ways you can get him killed (and therefore trigger the response) but still keep him though - for instance, Retreat (Core) or Narrow Escape (KotStorm).
Thanks for the explanation. I thought it was the case but was not sure.

If you don't trigger the response of the duplicate and let him die (dupe goes to discard pile and Drogo goes to dead pile) then yes, you can trigger it because he did indeed die
How does this work with
Retreat (Core)? Would Khal be considered killed and I choose to trigger his response first, to search for X Dothraki characters and put them in hand, and then I trigger the response of the event card to put him into hand, all while he is in Moribund?
Or does his response and effect only trigger "After" he is killed and placed in the dead pile?
But then again, the wording on the event card also says "After one of your unique characters is killed..."
Drogo still dies. Retreat changes his moribund destination from the dead pile to your hand, which is a pretty sweet thing for the Drogster :D

Edit: I realize I didn't actually clarify: You do get to trigger his response before retreat makes him go back into your hand (Responses happen in step 5, cards leave play in step 6).

Also note that the order you trigger those 2 responses does not matter. Even though Retreat makes him "moribund:hand" does not change the fact that he was indeed killed.
