Anyone got any viable ways to defeat this card, or TWO of them? With Shielding and 3 Blast damage, and the immunity it has to Events, it is truly a death-dealing card. It may cost 6 resources, but that can easily be arranged mid-game or the cost even lowered with other card effects. It says it has 5 damage capacity, which is pretty hefty, but with Shielding on itself, it actually has 6, and that shield can pretty much negate the first tactics you place on it, which means that even if you win the edge, this unit will still get to blast a massive hole in, or in most cases finish off, a lightside objective. Any ideas as to why this card isn't ridiculous to go up against?
You can defend with Obi Wan or Renegade Squadron. You can also shoot it with Ion Cannon Burst. You can overwhelm it with tactics icons so it cannot attack another time. You can play Subzero Defenses and First Markers to limit its attack options. You can defend with Hoth-buffed Rebels to kill it after it strikes. You can targeted strike it with Han + Trust Your Feelings.

Thanks for that response. I just wanted to point out, though, that it cannot be the target of enemy Events, including Ion Cannon Burst. First Markers might limit it in a Hoth-based deck, but Sub Zero Defenses is easily side stepped by striking with a chud first. Han might be able to do some damage with targeted strike, but again, with virtually 6 health (and really that shield counts for way more than one health since it can be continually regenerated), Han's targeted strike is like throwing a rock at a.... well... Star Destroyer. It seems that the ONLY viable option for cards like this, other than "return-to-hand" style game effects, is to overload it with Tactics icons, of which the dark side seems to have more of than the light.

You're absolutely right - thanks for pointing it out.

You can always boost Han with Ammunition Experts, Crossfires and Echo Caverns to destroy the destroyer ( :P ) in one attack. You can also use the Caverns or Crossfire to create a two-tactics guy.

I play Navy's Star Destroyers Deck. I swear i do have issues with Subzero Defenses.
You can set a trap: let the Star Destroyer and a TIE attack your objective. Then, use Swindled or Rebel Assault on the TIE. Your objective takes some damage (you can reduce it with Echo Caverns) but the Star Destroyer is dead.

I know it's hard to defend against them, but keep in mind that unit costs 6 and it has to be good to be playable in an aggro deck. :)
As with most big, expensive units, the most efficient way to deal with them is tactics. They're not elite, so they're much easier to keep tactics locked than something like Emperor Palpatine. You could eventually whittle them down with targeted strike and Han's reaction (which they can be targeted by), but if you can keep enough focus tokens on them you can leave your unit damage for higher priority targets.
That's pretty much what I was thinking in terms of a viable option against them. Sure does make them quite a difficult foe to get by. Tactics, coupled with possible trapping scenarios that require them to sacrifice a vehicle would be the most likely defense against them.
Yeah, tactics icons are the way to go. That said, it's still an awesome card. The shielding is HUGE, because those three blast icons WILL fire off unless your opponent can strike with two tactics icons beforehand. Being immune to Heroic Sacrifice is a nice bonus.
I found this guy to be a great defender in a pinch. Obviously you want to use the card's blast icons, but holding this guy back isn't the worst use for the card.
Sure. You can shield the engaged objective, and the Star Destroyer is tough enough to survive most skirmishes and deny your opponent the unopposed bonus. So, it's essentially going to reduce incoming damage by two when compared to an undefended attack. As you noted, it's not the optimal use for the card, but sometimes you have to use cards sub-optimally.

cost even lowered with other card effects.

What has two thumbs and has given the Light Side a free Deploy The Fleet objective to play this thing for 1? This guy.

Try a secret informer with two unit damage fate cards in the edge stack... Fastest way I lost this card so far :P

One of the cards text is that: event cards do not affect it.

If your enemy plays A New Hope would this card count towards one of the three units you pick or would it be exempt from the card effects overall because of the above text?

It can't be targeted by enemy events. Since A New Hope doesn't target anything (it's the DS player who chooses which 3 will not be destroyed) then Death Squadron Star Destroyer will count as one of your 3.

you must read the card text exactly for rules to make sense.   "this unit cannot be TARGETED by enemy events"     So it is immune to EVENTS that TARGET something.

Ion cannon blast for instance reads "Action: A target Vehicle or Droid unit cannot be declared as an attacker or defender until the end of the phase."   so this actually TARGETS something, and its an event, so the DSSD would be immune to it.

A New Hope, as you asked about reads: "Action: Each player chooses up to 3 units he controls. Return all units not chosen to their owners' hands."  This is an event, but it doesn't specifically TARGET anything, so the DSSD is not immune to this cards effects.
