Just wanted to post here that I accomplished the dream last night with Hostile Acquisition! At the final last major battle, I wore down my opponent's shields (who was playing Shadowsun with SM Elites+Sae'lum+STC) and then managed to steal a 5 health remaining Land Raider with DDS and then hit his whole army for 2. If Maxim becomes a thing and with Eldorath running more vehicles maybe this card isn't such a bad deal all the time. It is only a 2x and can be pretty clutch in certain match-ups.
Ah, good point. I didn't actually end up having to use it because he conceded once I landed the Hostile...but still. It was a clutch card.
Can you play backlash to cancel this card?
No. Backlash can only cancel effects that targets an Elite unit, so if Hostile Acquisition had read "After your warlord damages a target Vehicle army unit by and attack, gain control etc." then it would have been eligible for Backlash if Gorzod tried to commandeer an Elite Vehicle unit.
