Does this mean that the units participating are focused? Or is that a part of the resolution?

The headhunter looks to be caught in a net of some sort. Maybe it is a Conner Net?
thats exactly what it is. You can even see the device in both cards. Look closely behind the ship in the connor net card and you can see the same device spitting out web material in both cards.

Its funny how Niles Ferrier is mentioned as using this a lot, yet, its in landos set.
We still resolve fate cards, right? For edge battles, the last step is to count force icons which should be when a winner is determined.
Also, can this be played if LS defender lets the engagement go unopposed?
Yes, you certainly have to resolve fate cards before determining the winner of the edge battle. Some of them affect the outcome of the edge battle, like supporting fire, twist of fate, prince's scheme.
I don't see why not. You still have an edge battle even if only 1 player is participating in the engagement.
