The article on FFG states that you can use the Protect ability on this card to allow you to use Trust Me and Questionable Contacts more, but that doesn't seem right. Doesn't that mean that you have not paid the cost?
The cost has been paid. The cost for trust me is 2 damage. If you protect that damage, the damage has still been done, it's just been moved to a different location.

Is this true, though? Isn't this the same as the Chewbacca ruling, where he doesn't get to use his ability if damage assigned to him is reassigned using protect?

While I am not familiar with the ruling it seems sound. Chewbacca only does his reaction when damage is dealt to him. If the damage is redirected than he has not been injured. However, since damage is given one at a time in a linear progression, you could redirect choose not one of the damage tokens and the reaction would still work.

Remember that Chewbacca's GT is a reaction. Because it reacts to the damage being dealt, if he dies he is not around to use the reaction. It is very different then here. In the instance of trust me, the cost is two damage. As you go to assign the two damage to the objective as the cost of triggering the GT, you choose instead to protect the objective using the patrol craft. In order for the GT of trust me to trigger, the whole cost must be paid (2 damage), but protect would do just that for the objective.

Thanks for the explanation, makes sense.

and directly from Dahlman: As long as 2 damage (the cost) is dealt successfully (either to Trust Me, a System Patrol Craft, or some combination of both), the event cancel (the effect) of Trust Me will resolve.
