Greetings from the Jinteki Corporation.
We've been expecting you.

The glorious Jinteki Corporation has a long history of evolution and struggle in the face of disaster. You have been chosen to join us in our struggle to become something... better. Some do not approve of our methods. They call them inefficient or luck driven. True, clones do not have the raw power of bioroids, our databases are not as broad as those of NBN, and we work on tighter budget constraints than most Weyland projects. What makes up for it is something we have that makes us truly special - the human touch. Our code gates help us to regulate the paths of runners through our network. Runners fear our servers lined with honeypots and booby traps around every corner. We are known as Jintrapi for a reason, and we use this reputation to our advantage.

Your training as a sysop will start simply. We will teach you how to harness the power of the threat of net damage. Notice my wording since the "threat of net damage" is usually more important than the damage itself. We are the best corp on the net at dealing our particular brand of damage. A reckless runner could quickly find himself flatlined (redacted). Cautious runners find themselves uncertain of which servers to run lest we destroy their precious 'grip'. Use this fear to your advantage. Act unpredictably, leave agendas sitting before you score them, advance Project Junebug (Core) a few turns after placing it. If the runner gets caught up in your shell game they will end up wasting credits and resources in their confusion. With that in mind, Zaibatsu Loyalty (Core) is a Jinteki sysop's best friend.

If you would like to focus on net damage, Jenteki: Personal Evolution is a good place to start. You will easily net 4-5 net damage in the course of the game from it. That's equal to the max size of the runner's grip (barring Public Sympathy (Cyber Exodus)). Be sure to include 3 Neural Katana (Core) to start off your ice. Its strength is just high enough to be a pain for Ninja (Core). Don't forget to lay some Chum (Core) out, preferably in front of a Data Mine (Core) or an already hard to break piece of ice. If you plan on doing damage, always keep 4 credits on hand to activate the Snare! (Core) the runner will inevitably pull. Fetal AI (Trace Amount) is a great way to fulfill two wishes at once, giving you potential net damage and agenda points. It's also an agenda you can safely leave in remote servers for a while since the runner needs to have the credits to steal it. Pair this with Red Herrings (Core) to double the fun. Our upcoming Hokusai Grid (Humanity's Shadow) will punish the runners even further for accessing those Fetal AI's and snares! One single run can leave their hand empty since you could easily do 4 net damage. Neural EMP (Core) usually has met with mixed results. It's good for when you need that last net damage to flatline a runner, but usually one net damage is not enough for this situational card to make a difference.

Remember to supplement your servers with economic assets or you will quickly end up nowhere. All this net damage takes a bit of resources to set up and we don't have many in-faction credit makers. There is, of course, the usual Melange Mining Corp and PAD Campaign. Of those, I would recommend PAD Campaign (Core) since having drip economy helps with all the advancement you will do on traps. We do have a number of ways to reduce the cost of rezzing ice. An over-advanced Braintrust (What Lies Ahead) can go a long way for the rest of the game. Dedicated Server (A Study in Static) is a card that almost instantly pays for itself since you're able to use the recurring credits right after rezzing it.

Someone must teach these runners that running our servers isn't worth the effort it takes. Will it be you? We hope so.

Welcome to the team.

Great literary style - captures Jinteki perfectly.

Nice article. Very well written.

But why would the strength of Neural Katana be 'just high enough to be a pain for Ninja'? It would be a pain for Ninja if it had only 1 strength as well. The 3 strength is beneficial against an unboosted Femme, but is still within Mimic range.

Still it's an awesome piece of ICE I think. It basically says ETR when it's rezzed and the runner has no killer out. I like it more out of faction though. Everybody is going to assume that you run at least a couple of those in a Jinteki deck.
Wow I really like that opening quote, where is it from?
nice, my fave corp for all the reasons listed in the article.
Question for the other Jinteki players: Anyone get to use Bullfrog on a runner? What it a sweet play?
I played in a tourney and i never got to use it.
i played with bullfrog on turney past weekend but it wasnt as good as i thought... and same its with project junebug - almost everyone recognize it and i only waste credits to advance it (maybe i play it wrong, dont know :))
in a couple of games i got a nice little combo: watanabe + chimera
Katana scales extremely well against all sentry IBs except mimic.

My big problem with Jinteki is they have a rocky start because they have no economic passive. Weyland gets their +1, and has a bunch of in-faction cheapo ice like Wall of Ice. NBN can put down hunters, cadeceus, etc, which let you funnel your recurring trace creds into ice. Bioroid... goes without saying....

Also, as huge of a pain as it is to facecheck a neural katana, you can only have 3 in your deck. You probably won't be able to put 1 down on turn 1. If the runner DOES facecheck, and you have to rez a snowflake or a bullfrog, they come out on top. Jinteki also doesn't have great investment options for ice (katana is probably their #1), since wall of thorns is inefficient once rezzed, and their code gates can become very useless against Yog.

Cell Portal is actually very, very good if you just need to ETR once.

I've tried to make Jinteki work before and the lack of consistency really makes them unplayable for me...

Wouldn't you guys consider Private Contracts as an option? Trash cost 5 looks safe to me.
Also your day is pretty much ruined if they score any braintrusts. Those are supposed to be your free points...
I like Jinteki and NBN because their playstyle isn't straightforward and requires a good player to make interesting gambles and decisions.
I played HB for Corp in a tourney that lasted like 6 hours. Every HB game was the exact same: Roll out an economy and high STR ICE, then advance agendas when the time is right. The deck plays itself and was boring (but it wins, so I enjoyed it). I played it and so did most everyone else, practically the same deck, too.

With Jinteki, you (as the corp player) have a palette of traps and counterstriking ICE. You want the runner to run. You have to sell it, bluff it, use the shell game. You play the deck and you play the opponent. Ask them their hand size as you puzzle over your HQ or peek at your ICE. Count your credits and say, "oh good, I got 4. i'm done. go ahead" Get in their head. No other LCG let's you do that like Netrunner and Jinteki. It's not about winning pretty.

Very nice article, thanks!
I'm really looking forward adding Ronin in my Jinteki deck.

I'm really looking forward adding Ronin in my Jinteki deck.

This card is so good. Play it and advance it twice, Then advance twice next turn and let it sit. The runner doesn't know if it's a Junebug/Secretary or Ronin. And if they call it wrong and it is actually a Ronin, do it again and watch them break in sweat. 2x Ronin is a flatline without Public Sympathy, Deus X or Netshield. Or maybe it's a Junebug. Or maybe the first was Junebug.
I'm going to hate playing against this :D
All out of faction economy is great with Jinteki. Also recognising the potential of its set is also in picking out what exactly you're going for and going for it - one of my J decks rely on really cheap stuff - Data Mines, Chums, Chimeras, etc. I don't even do Neural Katanas as 4 is a big drain and almost guaranteed to suck you of trap money. Once I score a 5 Braintrust I never ever have to worry about rez money again as a Chimera is only 1 to rez and everything else is practically free. That deck flatlines like a boss by rush scoring and then building massive traps that cost basically a handful of creds to run. Recovering from Account Siphon's even easy.

And yes Private Contract, Pop Up Window, Marked Accounts, Pad Campaign, Red Herring, even Ash are great economic equalisers. Shadow to a certain extent. If nothing else they'll keep the runner poor as well, or they'll make you rich.

Love Jinteki <3

I dropped private contracts from my decks when I realized it was 11 creds for 8 actions (not counting draw). So it's like a hedge fund + 7 clicks for money. Underwhelming.

You're not supposed to use Private Contracts over Hedge Fund. PC is a long-term asset, I consider it a safer Melange Mining Corp. I find it really good for decks that focus on flatlining the runner, because usually these decks don't have enough pieces of ice to protect assets.
Lot's of things are safer than mining corp... like, nothing at all and just clicking for 8 creds. You'll only be 3 creds behind a PC, and you'll have an extra card in your deck.

No Neural Katanas? Hmm... Very interested to see a deck list as every Jinteki build i've run into has NKs.

Well... 3 credits for 1 card? You mean... like Beanstalk Royalties, for zero influence? Sounds good.
Beanstalks nets you 2 creds, so it wouldn't quite make up for it. A pad campaign, on the other hand...

not a quote, just a pseudo haiku I wrote. It's not a real haiku because there is no seasonal reference, and it's not in japanese. You learn some funny things when researching articles.

I've tried to make Jinteki work before and the lack of consistency really makes them unplayable for me...

It took me a while to get into their groove. It definitely plays quite differently than any other corp. The best was I can describe it is consistently inconsistent. You have to learn to rely on the inconsistency and uncertainty and make the runner just as afraid of it as you are.

But why would the strength of Neural Katana be 'just high enough to be a pain for Ninja'? It would be a pain for Ninja if it had only 1 strength as well. The 3 strength is beneficial against an unboosted Femme, but is still within Mimic range.

If the ninja is supported by an Ice Carver (core) your STR 1 sentry is no longer a pain for ninja. Even with Ice carver and datasuckers you'll have to use 2 counters to get it to 0 STR. The ninja can beat the samurai, but not without trying extra hard. Mimic (core) is an annoying exception in the economics. Depending on your setup it may not even be worth rezzing Neural Katana if they have a mimic out.

A pad campaign, on the other hand...

...is slower. =)
If you do nothing but click the Private Contracts for all 3 actions, then it is faster. At the end of action 8 you'll be up 4 creds compared to a pad campaign. But if you spend clicks to do something else (which is supposed to be one of PC's advantages), the gap diminishes.
Something's wrong with that haiku. Great article tho.
