Insight and Renown Episode 04 - The Old Mill

PodcastA Game of Thrones LCG

Why play mill? Discarding cards from the top of your opponent's deck doesn't actually affect your opponent directly unless you discard EVERY card from your opponent's deck (except in rare cases). And yet the ability to do so has been in the game from the very beginning. What drives mill to be an effective mechanic?

n the 2nd Edition of the Game of Thrones Living Card Game, we're in a unique position - thousands of card have come before us, but only a few are available for play right now. As new cards come out, what are the chances that we'll see some old abilities and mechanics revisited? The Insight and Renown podcast posits that it's pretty damn near 100%.

As a 12+ year veteran of this game, I've seen a lot of cards come and go, and thought it might be interesting to take a look at the history of this game, and see what cards and themes we might see again in the near future. Every episode will highlight one theme or mechanic in 2nd Edition, and look at some of the cards from the CCG era and 1st Edition that might be reprinted, or at least serve as inspiration for a new card.

"Seems like they are giving every mechanic to Lannister at the moment"

Preach.

Fun listen as always, Alex! I may have just missed them, but I didn't hear a couple of my favorite mill cards from 1E go by: Frostfang Peaks, which was obviously JUST a mill enabler, and the 5 cost King Euron that milled each time a challenge was initiated against you AND drew cards.

Thanks mate! Yeah, there are always a few cards I have to overlook in the interest of time. Fun fact, Frostfang Peaks was a reprint of "The Frostfangs" from the very first set of the CCG!

Although there was never much of a reason to play them. Far too slow and there weren't enough other mill effects at the time. More often it was used as a cheap way to keep the broken Mance Rayder promo in play (a 3 cost 3 strength tricon that didn't kneel to attack or defend, but was discarded if you didn't control a The North location).

I really like your podcast, the presentation is great and I'm enjoying the way you're focusing on just specific mechanics and themes. As I started with 2nd ed, learning about the 1st ed stuff is interesting. My only suggestion would be to tie it in with 2nd edition stuff, other than briefly mentioning Euron and Gregor you didn't really touch on what we currently have.

I've been playing a Greyjoy banner of the Dragon deck for a laugh, but it's actually been doing pretty well. I completely agree that pillage doesn't really do anything on its own, but even if it's just from a morale perspective it seems to have more of an effect than you'd think. Watching all your reducers or your only copy of Seal of the Hand get milled out gets pretty frustrating :)

I'm mainly focusing on The Reader and 3 Crones, plus a few other pillage cards like Blackwind's Crew. In all honestly I generally don't hit someone with the Crone more than once a game, but I've managed to get Gregor (sweet, sweet justice) and Aemon with it in separate games which is super satisfying.

It's definitely a mechanic I'd like to see more of.
