Targ Maesters Revisited – 1st Place Black Friday Deck

My reason for running Targ maesters over other Targ builds remain unchanged from GenCon (see this post http://bit.ly/tn1W6E). With the post-GenCon errata to the Maester’s Path (so that you can attach chains to printed maesters only), there are a few adaptations. In addition, the last two chapter packs of the maesters cycle + the first chapter pack of the champions cycle offers some flexibility in how the deck is created. Most notably, the Valyrian Steel Link was added (for obvious reasons), along with Shadow Parasites (for speed) and Barristan Selmy (for late-game closing potential). Building Season was added to help take better advantage of the usefulness of Rhaenys’s Hill, which frequently wins games.

The character list is optimized to maintain card advantage—half of my characters have intrigue icons, three more draw cards, and 2 save from being killed (two-thirds of my characters protect my hand in one way or another). Targaryen’s control mechanic (“burn”) is very card-intensive, and it typically cannot work without a large hand-size. It’s also easier to control the field if the opponent’s hand size is low.

I still feel the event-lite version of this deck, which plays more attachments (including Pyromancer’s Cache as the restricted card) and no Forever Burnings, is very competitive. Given the addition of Valyrian Steel Link (“draw chain”), however, Pyromancer’s Cache is no longer a necessity, and is sometimes a liability with so many maester builds (Tin Links) in the environment. In testing, I found that better card advantage could be achieved with Narrow Escape, especially in an environment where Greyjoy is particularly strong. In an event-lite version, I would not play the Shadow Parasites…without both Forever Burning and Hatchling Feast, the character becomes much less reliable. But in this build, with 5x burn events + 4x burn attachments, the parasite averaged about 2-3 STR each round, and frequently reached 6-8 STR.

One note about the chains I chose: Tin Link and Copper Link were included primarily as metagame tech against Greyjoy winter. I did not end up playing against winter at the tourney, but I played against two Stark decks, both of which ran winter, and quickly discarded their ravens by using the Copper Link to make the Tin Link a “raven.” I avoided running Carrion birds because they were 1-cost neutral characters (bad with Lady Dany’s Chambers) that were also discarded to Threat from the North. Carrion Birds aren’t terrible, but since it was more efficient to use the Tin Link, I was able to run parasites which also frequently helped me when intrigue challenges throughout the day. Though I did not run the Lead Link in this version, that was mostly out of fear of running more than 5 chains, but admit that it would have helped me significantly in at least two of the games I played (would have won me the prelim game I lost against Bara).

Finally, on the lack of location hate, Targ really lacks efficient solutions for this. Although Condemned by the Council is an option, it's hard for me to pull cards that would give me card advantage (burn/saves/characters) for cards that trade 1-for-1 with the opponent, work only against non-shadows, and only after I win a challenge. Also, the chances of me drawing a single piece of location hate is low. Although Favorable Ground seemed like a good solution conceptually (and I ran 1 in the GenCon version of this deck), it played out less effectively. I decided just to scrap location hate and focus on hand control (winning intrigue). Had I faced an opponent with location-heavy control, I would burn any characters, flood the board with my own characters, and slowly win challenges.

wicked.
By the way, best "Regroup" targets are Hatchling Feast, Narrow Escape, and (my favorite) Rhaenys Hill. I didn't get a chance during the tournament to regroup the hill, but I regrouped Hatchling Feast 3x and Narrow Escape 2x (regrouping Ser Jorah once and something else I can't remember). Overall, that plot is an amazing addition to this Targ deck.

I agree that maesters are the best version for Targ right now. It just fills so many holes. While my version was a bit different, your version was very painful to go against in a mirror match, and I believe our decks were Gualdo's only losses. Congrats on the win!
How usefull was apprentice collar ?
@Danigral: Yeah, the parasites and Narrow Escapes are very good in the mirror match...unfortunately you had the Paper Shields to stop them. Hatchling Feasts were great too with Threat...your version didn't play those, right? It seems like you actually had more burn out earlier than I did in the semis, since you drew into your Forever Burnings relatively early, and I didn't see mine until later. (I think I got to the Flame-Kissed first though.) It was really tough fought!

@Michaelius: Apprentice collar was incredibly useful...mostly in the match against Stark. With all Stark's blanking (especially Meera), this is the only thing that gives my maesters some assurance that they will remain "maesters". In the match against Gualdo, I assume he would have blanked my maester had I not been running the Apprentice Collar. Also, it took Danigral some time to get to his Meereneese Brothel, so in the meantime the collar protected me from Dragon Skull.
It's interesting that you only have 3 printed maesters (or can I not read?). Do you ever have trouble getting chains off your agenda? It seems like a big liability to me.
Yes, just three maesters (though apprentice collar helps in long games too). No, I normally don't have trouble. There actually isn't all that much removal in the environment that can target characters with chains. Warcrest decks, Wintertime Marauders, and Targ burn are pretty much the only thing. Aemon saves against Warcrest and is untargetable by marauders, so he's a good pick against Siege/GJ choke (if I don't need the influence). Against Targ, the Advisors are 3 STR and nearly always have attachments on them after the first round. So unless the opponent has both attachment hate AND a Dragon Skull, the Advisors are usually out of reach anyway. Even when they can kill maesters, Pyat Pree and other cards tend to present more pressing threats. Also, Narrow Escape can help a lot in situations where your maester dies. (I used it twice in the finals to return Maester Aemon.)
Congrats on the win!

Did you find the Shadow Seers useful with only 2(?) "Shadows" cards in your deck? Might either of the "Handmaidens" have been useful? (strength bumps for Dothrakis, attachment hate?)
@Zordren: There were 4 shadows cards...2x Red Keep, 1x Varys, and 1x Dragon Skull. Generally speaking, I find that 4-5 shadows cards is the right number with 2-3x Seers, and they worked out to be very useful in this tourney. Dragon Skull also comes back with the Bronze Link, so being able to put that in play is useful. Even without shadows cards though, I like the Seers better, since they are 2 STR and thus can push through intrigue challenges and don't discard to Threat, all for 1 gold.
Good point on anti-blanking protection with collar.

But there's something that I cannot understand - why not even a single copy of Linked Advisor ? Wouldn't he be a perfect addition as additional maester for games where you draw Red Keep in initial hand as well as another high STR Int character ?
That might be a good idea, but I think he would probably almost always want to get the additional influence for Flame-Kissed. Linked Advisor is still a lot more expensive on average than his other intrigue characters, and it won't matter much if you're primarily using them for draw to try to force an early Valar.
Yeah, I agree with Danigral. As much as I like the Linked Advisors, they have proven to be pretty low-impact, since they're always the last maester I would search for, and they cost 3 gold to marshall. It's just a little more cost-effective to play a second Jorah over one of these guys. If you plan to run Outwit though, these guys become much more attractive.
About not running the lead link... There is no rule that says that you have to put all the links in your deck onto your agenda. You can run 6 chains, and when you decide which to put on your agenda, only put the 5 you'll need most. This way, you would still have a chain floating around in your deck, but at least you'll have it in games when you really need it. It's something to think about.
