Why (Core Set) Jon Snow Sucks and Will Probably Always Suck

Joe From Cincinnati is back with another article about a card that he hates. Care to guess which one it is?
WRONG!
I'm just kidding. I have no idea what your guess was, but I'd be surprised if you nailed this one. In a meta with so many overpowered and imbalanced cards, I've decided to take the high road and, instead, complain about a card that is both laughably weak but also remains a beacon of hope for the future that several players still cling to today.
You're probably more on board now. I'm talking, of course, about Core Set Jon Snow.
This card sucks. And I'll tell you why.
In the article.

Maybe Donal Noye when he's made / released will be able to go find an NW Item or Weapon attachment from your deck or discard pile and add it your hand. That'd be pretty thematic and help out Jon.
I think that they were just too afraid to make him cheaper, to prevent Voltron (a la v1 Red Viper) decks, that simply defended and then all of the sudden just went 15 and won. Especially in a card designed not to be Poppy'd.
He clearly isn't worth the 6g, and unfortunately he isn't worth the trouble of getting him and keeping him into play, but it's definitely one of those cards that you can say that a small tweak into the 'powerful' side would make it TOO good.
Interesting article/rant...
Mole Town
Unique non-loyal Night's Watch location, cost 1, The North
All your characters gain the Night's Watch affiliation
Marshall Action: kneel Mole Town to stand a Night's Watch character
Combats kneel effects except Mel+Flames (Jon's bane) and makes Tyrell Watch with 2x Jousting Contest and 1x Building Orders (plenty of targets like this and Longclaw) a possible Rush build? And pseudo economy with a reducer in play.
I don't think a single card will solve his issues but I can see a combination of cards that would make him more playable (something like the Wildlings pack I proposed here).
Thanks for a good frustrated letting-off-steam read!
Here´s another way to improve Jon: just print another version of him (e.g. the Lord Commander version, granting him some icons and keywords and stuff)...
But seriously, that is another problem of the core set card: most certainly there will be another NW Jon Snow (in the Deluxe expansion, say), and it is very likely that it will outshine core set Jon in multiple ways. It is much easier to print one new card than to print several cards just to improve a theme that will always be meh, especially with Valar coming.
This deck won a 14-player SC in Germany. Pre first snow of course.
I'd like that. It would help with Old Bear's Raven too, which will be nice.
Yea, it seems like they were so dedicated to not making him a voltron that they turned him into an unplayable piece of garbage. I think they need to print "companion" cards for him. Almost like what Dany has with her dragons. If there was a character that gave him insight, one that gave him renown, one that gave him intimidate etc, then I'd build that voltron deck.
I would love if FFG printed that location for 2.0!
Yea, that was my best solution, but in the interest of discussion, I thought I'd at least attempt to come up with some way to make him an attractive deck centerpiece haha.
Yea, First Snow was the true dagger that probably put Jon out of contention for the life of the game. As for that particular store championship, I can't speak to it. I know I've won small 10 person tournaments before just because I knew my match ups and I knew the people I was playing and how to beat them. So I'd likely chalk that win up to player skill and a little bit of luck
.
Joe, i hear you. i was so disappointed to see it in the core set like that. i guess it was deliberately designed this way to make it not OP.
That said, i still keep one copy in my deck for sentimental reasons. i know it's against logic and reason. But i was able to use Jon Snow to beat my opponents occasionally simple because they were not familiar with it. sigh...
I did the same thing for several months. I bought the Jon Snow Playmat early on and felt bad playing a deck without Jon on a playmat showing Jon's face.
But I got over it once I started attending Regionals and store championships haha.
