All Things Shagga - Dragon Egg

Small Council All Things Shagga Kennon

Hello readers, and welcome to the future! It’s a new year and a new column here at All Things Shagga! Doesn’t it seem strange to see those four magical digits 2013 now? I’m pretty sure that I was promised a flying car by this point, and damned if I’ve seen one yet. Still, even here in the far flung years of the future, A Game of Thrones is still going strong. With my look at the chapter pack cycles conveniently finished up in time for the end of the year, we now find ourselves ready to embark on a journey back into the land of Shagga deck design. Based on the most recent of the cycle review entries, it looks like the votes are in to ring in the new year with a deck based around Dragon Egg. Let’s take a look at what we can figure out.

Key Cards:

Dragon Egg (AHM) - This, of course, is the card that we’re planning on using to make the whole shebang run. But what does it do exactly? Well, the answer, sadly, is not much on its own. I’d hesitate even to quite call it an engine card, but it’s surely one of the more interesting and wacky abilities in the game. There are a few important things to remember about it right off the bat as we construct the deck. 1. It’s an attachment, and thus is very fragile. 2. It has to go on an opponent’s card, so it’s potentially even more fragile. 3. The most likely card type that you’ll be able to play it on is “character” because it’s probably the only one that no deck can survive without at the moment. 4. This leads us to looking at characters that we’d be able to abuse by granting them ambush.

Magister Illyrio (VM) - You know who likes characters with ambush? In the immortal Darryl Loyd’s words, “Illyrio!” Specifically, Illyrio’s ability triggers off of characters entering play during the Challenge phase, and granting ambush to all of our characters makes that extremely easy to pull off.

0 cost characters- These are perfect for the deck in a couple regards. First, 0 cost means that we can ambush them in at any time, regardless of our resource base and whether or not we’ve had to use our influence on something else that phase. Additionally, they play very well with Setup, which is important to offset our agenda and to add a level of pseudo draw in the early game in order to help us dig into our combo pieces earlier. With ten 0 cost characters along with several 1 cost characters and the low cost locations, we should be set for both of those applications. Additional bonus points in this deck go toward Disgruntled Mercenary who can actually be ambushed in to burn someone with Illyrio, then return to hand and ambush in again during the same phase! Also, special mention to Shadow Parasite, which can ambush in and then immediately gain strength with Illyrio’s burn. In fact, with all of the ambushing we’re planning on doing, the Shadow Parasite is likely to be a solid strength character.

Long Lances (THoBaW) - You know what else likes characters with ambush? The Long Lances are an amazing addition to the Targaryen arsenal, which make them nearly immune to Lannister kneel and allow them multiple uses of “kneel to do X” characters. In fact, in watch John Bruno’s GenCon deck, I learned just how amazing it can be to utilize the Long Lances every phase to keep standing and reusing a character like Street Waif, who immediately turned into a shoe-in for the deck. In fact, the 0 cost characters above are also very conducive to entering play in multiple phases, in order to accommodate the Long Lances.

Lady Daenerys's Chambers (Core) - Ok, so the core of the deck revolves around being able to ambush in characters, but in order to do so with most of ours, we need a Dragon Egg around, and gosh darn it, if those suckers aren’t fragile. Especially once the opponent learns how important they are to our plan. Enter, House of Dreams as an agenda with Lady D’s as our location of choice. Immediately we have access to the recursion we need to keep things running. Of course, the Street Waifs help with that as well, but Lady Daenery’s Chambers helps us get some more burn back as well in the form of Flame Kissed and Harried by Dragons.

The Brazen Beasts (ARotD) - Well, with all of the strength reduction we’re doing, we might as well make sure that we can get something out of the deal. Hopefully, the Beasts help us add up a little bit of extra burn to help speed up our game. Unfortunately, much of our burn (Illyrio & Incinerate) are Challenges only, but Flame Kissed and Forever Burning should give us some options to spread the love a bit, and of course the Beasts do have renown as well.

Maegi's Promise (QoD) - Ok, I’m usually on the fence as to whether I think this is a decent card or not, but there’s a good chance that this deck doesn’t do a whole lot without Illyrio to make it sing, so we really ought to have a backup plan in case he gets knocked off the board. There’s enough recursion that it shouldn’t be as much of an issue if he’s discarded, but a dead Illyrio means we’re grinding to a halt, so this is essentially to get him back when you need him.

Thoughts on Play:
As crazy as this sounds, you really shouldn’t kill everything in sight. Of course, most of the deck is dedicated toward burn, but too much of the deck is tied up in characters (through Illyrio and a character based Dragon Egg) for you to force a reset out of an opponent when you’re not prepared for it. Losing your Illyrio to Valar with no Maegi’s Promise in hand and then drawing 2 dupes is really the pits, so both your and your opponent’s character presence is something you’ll have to manage. To help do so, take a look at their most fearsome, beefiest, or otherwise most important character as the place to land your Dragon Egg. If they’re less likely to sacrifice it early to military claim, the better for you. That said, your opponent will kill that character for claim, and generally quickly. You can both mitigate this disadvantage, however. Save your military challenges for last whenever possible. Utilize your ambush characters and burn to make certain that you can force through the other two challenges, and particularly focus on stripping their hand before clearing their board. Still, even if they kill the character, you should be able to bring your Dragon Egg back on the next Marshalling with relative ease, so don’t be afraid to use it on key characters to bait your opponent into killing off something important. This is particularly useful with unique characters, which your ambush happy Illyrio won’t be able to hit.

The plot deck also offers some solutions to mitigate weakpoints in the draw deck. Of course, uniques can be a problem, so Search and Detain can give you some temporary spot removal in order to clear out something particularly troubling for a bit. In case you do wind up down and out, Wildfire Assualt is my reset of choice in this deck because you do have characters that you want to protect. No one wants to Valar their own Illyrio. Also, Forgotten Plans helps against Fear of Winter, which would put a huge hold on a deck like this for a turn by preventing us from putting into play more than one of those cheap ambushed characters.

The second half of the plot deck, however, seek to capitalize on the strengths of this deck. First Snow of Winter is a great way to return all of your weenies to hand in order to reset your capability to burn with Illyrio. Blockade and Rains of Autumn both muck with your opponent’s resources, which is something of a non-issue for you when you’re ambushing 0 and 1 cost characters into play. My favorite find for the deck, though, is The Grand Melee. Since you’ll be focused more on small characters, it can be tough to win on their strength alone, so why not just play to their capabilities in numbers? Ambush here becomes particularly useful as you can really muck with your opponent’s combat math by dropping more characters into play in between challenges in order to change totals. Sure, it’s not as awesome as First Snow of Winter probably is here, but it’s always fun to find the perfect deck for an oft forgotten card.

Great column and an interesting deck. I'd want to fit Ambush from the Plains in there, or some way to get Illyrio back if he's discarded. Also Rains of Autumn doesn't seem that useful, so I might use another two claim plot instead.
Is there any way for me to export the decklist straight to OCTGN so I can try the deck, or do I have to actually build it myself in the deckbuilder?
Hi Kennon - I thoroughly enjoyed your article and believe Dragon Egg has potential to add some dynamic deck design to Targaryen.

One thing that I want to point out about Dragon Egg(and in this deck in particular since you are not using KotHH) is that if you attach it to a location, it will allow you to ambush in locations with the "Limited" keyword without any limitation. Therefore, I might consider the Temple of the Graces (Core) as a viable addition to this type of a deck as a resource. Once Dragon Egg is attached to a location, you can ambush these in for 0 influence during the challenges phase(which you cannot obtain that gold until the next Marshaling phase anyway).

I might consider the event Recruitment (VD) over Maegi's Promise because your deck is full of Mercenaries and Ally's. Perhaps To be a Dragon(but requires a plot deck change) as well. Maegi's Promise will do the job differently for you because it doesn't require plot deck changes and can be used on unique characters, but I think I usually have problems with certain events that I need to wait until dominance to use. The reason you are using Maegi's Promise makes really good sense though(because you want to protect Illyrio from being out of play). If Illyrio is discarded, there are other ways to grab him at least.

I also think it might be worth considering Maegi Crone (BtW) since you will be frequently draining non-uniques STR down to 0. You can trigger her upon playing or ambushing in Sellsword Desert's as well since they will be hurting your own Allys and Refugees alike(they will actually be hit with 0 STR for being an Ally as well). I think they will help you hit the draw cap frequently as long as they are in play.
I hate to play spoilsport, but you won't be able to ambush your characters in multiple phases, except for the ones who already have it, because Dragon Egg gives your cards Ambush only during the Challenges phase.

The way the card's text is phrased, wouldn't you need two of them in play to reduce a STR 2 Ally or Refugee down to STR 0?
The Sellsword Deserter (CD) himself is effectively a STR 1 character on his own. I think the text would have to read as such to have him be STR 0 the moment he hits the table:
Characters with the Ally trait get -1 STR.
Characters with the Refugee trait get -1 STR.

I live for Will's public embarrassment!

Also Rains of Autumn doesn't seem that useful, so I might use another two claim plot instead.

An Ambush heavy deck like this seems perfect for
Retaliation! (ASoSilence).
Bwahahahahaha. *sigh* The perils of being a Shagga. We live an a world that doesn't so much rely on card specifics. :P It's so easy to read a card and then assume you remember the exact wording months later without bothering to re-read it exactly.

So, ok, you're not going to be able to do the Long Lances' stuff as often, but nothing particularly counted on being able to do that in a bunch of other phases, so the majority of the deck interactions should work just fine.

Retaliation is a good idea here. Speaking of plots, though, it does bring to my attention that I accidentally seem to have skipped over a sentence or two noting that since so much of your deck can be ambushed in so cheaply, you're able to avoid a lot of the requirements of traditional resources, thus my inclusion of Blockade and Rains of Autumn, which should hamper the opponent, but leave you virtually untouched if timed right. Still, the extra 2 claim may be more practical in the end.

I'm liking what I'm seeing with this deck!

Absolutely. I wasn't suggesting specific scenarios. I was speaking generally. However, Maegi's Crone is 1 strength so will trigger off Sellsword Deserter entering play if you want a specific scenario.
I will be giving this deck a shot. I will probably add
Volantis (VM),
Pentos (CD)
Ambush from the Plains (QoD) to the deck for extra ambush and influence.
I think the Free City locations are awesome for this type of deck.
Just remember that the Free City locations won't lower the cost of Ambushing things in, aside from just using their influence to do so.

Also, I thought pretty hard about Ambush From the Plains and Recruitment for the deck, but I disliked that they couldn't get Illyrio back from the dead pile. Though it sucks if he is discarded, you can draw and play another copy. Since the other two Illyrio's and most of the deck's function would be inoperable if he's in the dead pile, I really think that Maegi's Promise is going to be more practical.
Did you consider going the Bruno route with Waste their Time and To be a Dragon? The low gold on Waste won't matter so much given your low resource curve.

Absolutely. I wasn't suggesting specific scenarios. I was speaking generally. However, Maegi's Crone is 1 strength so will trigger off Sellsword Deserter entering play if you want a specific scenario.

Gotcha, I just misread your post.

Why wouldn't they? Isn't kneeling influence the cost to play Ambush characters? The Free Cities cards don't specify gold cost or phase, unless I'm missing something? Which, of course, happens all the time...

Free Cities reduces the cost of "playing" a card. Remember that Ambush is a "put into play" effect.

Page 11 Section 4.4 of the FAQ covers the distinction if you need a refresher.
Page 11 Section 4.4 of the FAQ was exactly what I was missing, thanks! :)
I tried the deck with some variation due to not having Disgruntled mercenaries and street waifs and i play mostly melee and it did great. Most of the time i could win my chalenges or even get unoposed and defend on the ones i wanted. For melee i added
Dry Season (CbtC) instead of forgotten plans as it cripples economy and saves and its a two claim plot perfect on a valar turn.
I would also recomend adding
Khal Drogo (Core) as it is a free ambush character that can win you an unoposed chalenge and its repeatable maybe remove that 2nd Xaro's home cause i found the deck to be influence tight even with the title. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm glad it looks like this deck has been a hit. As I get ready to get to work on my next twisted conglomeration, I'm curious about the format of the article. Is this slightly modified format with a clear "Thoughts on Play" section an improvement? Is it something that I should keep?
For me Thoughts on Play is even better than posting the actual deck cause it helps me get in the philosophy of the deck so i can make my own changes so thumbs up here !!
Agreed - Thoughts on Play is a great addition.
I've been playing a Dragon's Egg hybrid of Bruno's Championship deck, and I'm here to tell you, giving ambush to characters who weren't costed around it can be IMBA in the right situations. Daario, Jorah, and Illyrio himself...as paratroopers they're so much fun.

I think with this deck I'm going to stick with Green Hatchling (TWH) instead of Black, though. I find that as often as not, I'm winning initiative, forcing them to go first, and the only challenge I care about is Intrigue. My characters are in hand, safe from military claim, and an unopposed power challenge? Meh, power doesn't matter until you've got 15 of it. As long as I'm not losing cards from hand, I'm in good shape.
Long time lurker, first time poster here. Really like the article, and I think that the thoughts behind the deck are particularly useful.

Is using Rhaegar's Harp (BoRF) a possibility for the deck? It would allow you to ambush in absolutely anything you want to?

Also, when ambushing in a card, do you have to pay an out of house penalty?
Unfortunately, Rhaegar's Harp doesn't really combine with Dragon Egg as it gives traits, which won't effect the ability of your other cards to be ambushed in. I believe you might be thinking that it grants different card types (character, location, attachment, event) which would be necessary to allow one Dragon Egg to turn on ambush for absolutely anything.

That said, it does work nicely with Jorah and Daario to give characters the traits that they hit, thus letting you discard characters that you wouldn't normally be able to.

No, I don't believe you have to pay the out of house penalty for ambush, but since all of the Targaryen cards with Ambush are house only, and Dragon Egg is house Targaryen Only and only grants it to Targaryen cards, it's not something that comes up
Ah, I thought when Dragon Egg said type it meant traits - eg if you put Dragon Egg on an ally you can ambush in allies. That makes Dragon Egg even better than I thought it was!

Also I didn't register that Dragon Egg only allows you to ambush in Targ characters only, so the only use for not paying OOH penalty is for Dragon Chaser (SB). If you were that desperate for Intimidate in a non GJ deck and had 4 influence handy.

I need to read the cards more carefully
Haha, I usually do too.

Okay, I'm probably being a total noob here but do characters which attach to house cards such as Quentyn and Shireen count as being in play and is there card type counted as character or agenda? I'm just trying to think of characters to attach Dragon Egg to that won't just get killed for military claim.
