Banter Behind the Throne - Episode 38 - British Pants

thatspeel mrdav banterbehindthethrone

This week Johnny Wright, architect of the wonderful AAAWWW YEAH deck from first edition joins us (and replaces Craven, who has the flu) to chat Martell. At some point Peel disappears but he returns so don't worry!
We also have spoilers, and somehow manage not to talk about To The Spears.

All the stars

This podcast, and this episode in particularly, is OP RESTRICT.

As a Martell fan, I loved this episode. As a podcast fan, I ask you to get some better microphones.

I said something similar to this when Johnny Wright wrote the article for the White Book about Banner of the Sun so apologies for the repetitiveness, but one thing I think he overlooks when he talks about how much is lost from the cards when you use them in a banner instead of as a main faction is the fact that this is true for ALL banners.

Look at, for example, some cards commonly held up as good banner cards from other factions - The Hound. Yes, he's great, but is he's not as great in a Banner as he is in Lannister, where you can use him highly effectively with INBAMF and Hear Me Roar. Randyll Tarly. He can be stood by STR pumps, but Tyrell has the best means to take advantage of that "win by 5" tech thanks to The Mander. Bran Stark. He can be sacrificed to cancel events in any faction, but it's only Stark where that sacrifice then lets you stand your board with Robb. And so on.

What's a better question when considering whether Banner of the Sun as an agenda is not comparing to Martell main faction, but comparing it to other banner agendas. "Are the 12+ cards I'm taking more valuable than what I can take elsewhere? Do they complement my main-faction cards, either by emphasising strengths or off-setting weaknesses? Do I get more value from this banner than going mono-faction?"

Now, if all you're looking for is how to best use the Martell cards, then sure, Martell main faction should be a self-evident truth. But most people who run Banner of the Sun aren't doing it because they just love Martell so gosh-darned much, they're doing it because they want to build a strong deck full of good cards.

Wamma -- you are, of course, correct.  Most cards are designed with their native faction in mind, and are therefore most effective in that context.  However, I think there are a few points that makes Martell a little different and therefore worth talking about.

1)  Banner of the Sun is being played much, much more than Martell main faction.  Because of the steep learning curve for the house, and the fact that their strongest single card (Nymeria) is non-loyal, many people are simply not playing the faction at all.  I want to encourage others to do so.

2)  Because the goals and play style of Martell as a faction tend to be so different than most every other faction, I believe Banner of the Sun tends to have a lot more anti-synergy with other factions.  Again, Nym is a great card almost anywhere -- but do the 9 others you have to include really do that much to help you win?  There are exceptions to this in certain builds, but my second hope is to get people to think about why they are using which particular agenda.

3)  Personal bias.  I really like Martell :P  I've never played as a faction-loyalist before, so this experience is new to me and I'm enjoying sharing it.

Now, as for comparing the Sun Banner to other agendas...  This is obviously going to vary deck-to-deck, but in general I think I prefer Lion, Stag, Rose and possibly LotC to Sun.  This is largely because all those agendas have ways to actively generate you power, while Sun does not.
