Beheading Ned - Blurring the Lines

Small Council Beheading Ned OKTarg

Thank you all for indulging me on these Beheading Ned articles. I came into the game as a Ned, and I'm still proud to have more than my fair share. However, the time has come for me to migrate towards a more Jaime series in Fire and Blood, so this will be my last article. Anyone looking to step up to the plate and contribute to these is more than welcome to PM Darksbane to put your candidacy forth.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone in having come to the game as a Nedly player. In fact, I bet most of us did in some way, but we quickly find our Jaime or Shagga footholds. That's why I'm calling this article "blurring the lines." I really feel that you can express your Jaime or Shagga self with a Ned twist, and one of the best ways is with a trait based deck.

User PulseGlazer has submitted a deck very Shagga in style that revolves around Dorne as your House of Dreams location. The idea here is to use Dorne to reduce your Ladies and flood the board and drop Power of Blood. Profit. Win. Gloat.

So here's the deck:

As you can see, there's a ton of income, most of it 0 cost for setup, and a ton of ladies. Don't overlook some of the subtleties, however. Notice the Hellholt Engineer. If you're going second, you likely can double-trigger Dorne for a reduction by two on each of your ladies! Fantastic! The Underhanded Assassin assists a bit with character control, since you have so many non-kneelers. They're forced with the choice of letting you win while not kneeling, or kneeling a bunch of characters to block knowing that you can hop in a deadly at any time. Very nice! Also nice is Myrcella Lannister on a To the Spears! turn. Perhaps that ability is worth trying to find space for Game of Thrones in the plot deck as well. Who knows?

One thing that the deck needs is more draw, which is where the new plot Negotiations at the Great Sept would come in handy. Pulse put this together before that pack dropped, but I bet this would slot right in. Claim 2 with decent gold and a hand refill is proving to be a huge boon to decks like these. Paramours are OK, but redundancy is nice of course!

To those of you who say that this deck is more Shagga than Nedly, perhaps you're right. I just love celebrating all the different types of deckbuilding in Thrones, and trait-based stuff is some of my favorite. That's why I ran a Shaggy, Nedly, Jaime-y deck at regionals this year in my Dragon Maesters deck. So even though I'm taking a retirement from this column, I'll see you over there at Fire and Blood and I look forward to a fresh viewpoint on the Nedly side of the game.

Thanks for reading and take care!

I'd just like to thank OKTarg for stepping up on Beheading Ned and giving us some great Nedly articles for the last year. He will be missed on Beheading Ned but we are lucky to have him be focusing totally on Targaryen now in Fire and Blood! Beheading Ned needs some volunteers though. If you think you'd be interested in writing a Nedly article drop me (Darksbane) a line and let me know.

Zero events? Maybe I missed it, but what's the restricted card?
Orphan of the Greenblood.

No events because setup is so bad....
I was almost going to suggest Arya Stark (Core) as a potential addition, but then noticed there are only 3 cards(only 2 out at once) in this deck with influence. If you wanted to try this idea out, you could always swap 1x Palace Fountains with 1x Doran's Chambers. It not only reduces your limited card count, but it provides gold that can be used on any character(not just Martell) and 1 influence. Anyway, Arya Stark could be used in such a way that she can steal Stealth/Renown from an opponents character OR one of your disabled(knelt or no icons) renown characters.

Lyanna Stark (ODG) could easily replace Daenary Targaryen I think. The only time Daenarys will be cheaper is when the Alliance plot is out. Otherwise, Lyanna can make Underhanded Assassin more effective against unique characters in challenges. Besides, I think we all know that Daenarys isn't in the deck for her ability, so Lyanna could be a better fit.

In the description it sounds like you are confusing Underhanded Assassin with Silent Assassin (ASoSilence).

So it is. Oops.
If Underhanded Assassin is not being used, then ignore that part of my Lyanna Stark comment.

That Lyanna/Underhand combo is clever. Nice thinking...

problem with that combo though is the underhand would be reduced too so would effect all the same people anyways.

I think you missed the idea. That is true against non-unique characters because they are all hit by -1 STR while kneeling, but unique characters STR stays the same. Therefore, 2 STR participating unique characters will no longer count their strength since Underhand Assassin's STR will be at 1.

I totally dig Craster in a deck full of women. Nedliness +1

hahah sorry my bad I read the Underhand Assassin totally wrong I thought it was lower strength
Maybe not "Nedly" in the traditional sense, but it certainly is a theme deck. My friend makes theme decks almost exclusively. They may not function perfectly, but having a "Bastard" or "Faceless Man" deck sure is sweet.

It still plays funky and lacks consistency :(
