Beyond the Wall, Season 1 Episode 1

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Jcwamma Podcast Prized A Game of Thrones

In this inaugural cast, Istaril and Darknoj introduce themselves, the cast, and their guest JCWamma, to review the Prized mechanic. They discuss the data collection project "The Annals of Castle Black" and discuss plans for the cast in the immediate future.

As the cast is an "enhanced" podcast in m4a format, you may have to download it rather than use the default in-browser player. An RSS feed and ability to subscribe on itunes will be coming within a couple days.

I am a sucker for a podcast - good work fellas. The appearance of another podcast on the scene thankfully stops my plans for a rival cast in their tracks, which is no bad thing in retrospect. At the moment the format of that aborted project would simply have been weekly extended arguments between myself and my other half arguing whose decks were worse, why Brienne of Tarth is a b*tch, the mysterious rule in the FAQ that says you have to make a cup of tea for anyone who has to suck up a claim of more than 2, and a special feature on which underrated cards from which house were torn up and thrown across the kitchen this week.

Like I say, probably best left unrecorded.
Well done gentleman. The online AGOT community is so awesome
imo you shoulda used alex for the logo instead of jon. he's cuter. like a little canadian leprechaun.
It wont let me stream, is there another link
Try downloading it directly instead of streaming it. They mention that in the article.
PopePwnage, it's probably because it's a .m4a format instead of an mp3. Most browsers can still stream it, but if you're having trouble you could consider trying another browser, or right-clicking on the "download this podcast" link in order to download it (Save target as).

If you're using a device capable of using itunes, within a day or two we should have the podcast listed on itunes so you can access it from there. I'm sorry for any troubles accessing it!
got it, thanks Istaril
awsome guys!!!

Yay! Is this weekly?
Yeah, Aaron - that's the plan! We already have about 3-4 episodes worth of pre-recorded segments to make sure we can keep to our deadlines, so we'll have a lot of warning if we start to slip behind.
Coolio. Glad to have another AGOT show around. Will you be submitting non-iTunes feeds around as well? I'll be wanting to subscribe on my Android device.

And out of professional curiosity, what does the m4a format bring to the table?

I enjoyed it. No offense to Kennon and the 2C1C crew, but I never have the time to listen to their cast, a 30-40 minute episode is perfect though.
The m4a format allows me to do an "enhanced" cast. In this case, I'm using the following functionalities:
-Chapter Markers (Each segment can be skipped to)
-Chapter Info (each segment has a title, picture and/or links where relevant)

That means that if you want to skip a segment aimed at newer players, or go find an old part of an episode you liked, it should be easier to navigate within the casts.

We will have an RSS feed, which I assume will be sufficient for your android device?

Great podcast guys! I like the ideas you have about being more international, and the music is great :)
@Agktmte- Haha, you know you could listen in chunks. :P

Good show though. I enjoyed having something else to listen to to keep my mind on Thrones while I drove up to see some friends.

I do, however, disagree a bit with your presentation of Doomed/ Prized. Istaril said that he sees Doomed as a binary system where you're either not effected by it at all, or have lost the game, but I would argue that if your criteria is the win condition of the game, then Prized is in exactly the same boat- either your opponent has 15 power and have won, or their power is immaterial. How many rush decks have gotten to 10+ power and then still lost the game? Did the power that they did gain mean anything?

Of course, from a more practical perspective, there were indeed cards in the CCG era that did operate differently depending on how many Doomed cards were in your dead pile (most notably Prince's Loyalist and Defenders of the North) so you could also make the argument that Doomed didn't play as a binary mechanic. In fact, the cards that counted the number of Doomed cards probably saw more play than any cards we currently have in the LCG that worry about power totals.
The argument that there were cards that acted differently based on the number of doomed cards in your dead pile is a good one (and I didn't play in those days, I didn't realize those effects abounded), but I'd still say that playing (well, losing) a prized card has an immediate result on board position, regardless of all other cards in play. In the end, that power may or may not have mattered, but it's affecting the game state - how you challenge, what cards you play etc.
Sure, but wouldn't a doomed card have the same general effect?
great podcast. rss link for upcoming episodes?
Great work!
I like the title, and the idea of the podcast (beyond North America metas). It sounds good, and I'm looking forward for the second episode.
Xavier - we now have an RSS feed (http://feeds.feedbur...cardgamedb/OxWh), and the cast has been submitted to itunes - so it should be up there shortly. Please keep in mind that the feed is cached, so it'll take a little while to show up once the cast is actually uploaded.

I also hope to submit that feed to a couple of podcast sites today.
Doomed does have a switch, where (ignoring other cards that interact with the keyword) it's either doing nothing or everything. With Prized, the number that have left play will always result in the game state being affected, regardless of whether it actually changes who wins. Maybe if you lose one Prized card that will make the difference, or maybe it will take two, or maybe it will take three - it differs from game to game, and also at different time points in the game. Maybe a rush player reaches 14 and you can't play a Prized event as a result, but then you remove a couple of their power from the play and suddenly you can. There's clearly a lot more nuance in that regard than there was with the Doomed mechanic, where every game you could definitely lose 4 doomed cards without it mattering, and the 5th one determined everything.
And, to follow up on that, the ability to play a prized card to deliberately put power on your opponent's house adds an even further dimension - and can greatly benefit a] rush & aggro decks, b] anyone who hates flea bottom scavengers.

I feel one of the main aspects we missed, though, was going over how prized interacts with siege. Might mention it some other time.
WHOORAY!!! Your 'cast was awesome. As a rabid podcast junkie, having a cast that was directed toward newer players and discussing topics that will improve my playskill and understanding of the game is much appreciated. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to the next installment.
And the cast is now up on itunes - thanks to those who have already subscribed to the feed in one way or another!
Great podcast guys. I look forward to more of these... all killer, no filler.

Go Canada!
