Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Alec I AGOT 2010 Game of Thrones Podcast
Click here for the podcast. In this week's episode, due to travel woes and his poor planning, Istaril records alone and at the last minute. At least it's short. He starts by chatting about some FFG and regionals news, and introduces a pre-recorded segment in which he and Darknoj interview 2010 world Joust champion Alec I. to kick off our "AGOT retrospective" series. Finally, in the closing comments, Istaril announces the sole (?) upcoming regional... and a big National!

Looking forward to listening to this! 2010 was the year i started playing Thrones, so this is bound to be a trip on memory lane.
I still feel bad for Alec because of the ridiculous (in retrospect) TLS backlash.
I find this stuff fascinating.
I loved the historic interview. This is great content Istaril and an excellent choice during a "dry" week news-wise, but it would always be a good choice. I would have loved to hear more specifics about where Alec felt the game was going that he disliked so much. While I have an idea, it would have been cool to hear if that issue was "fixed" or if he and his metamates would have still hated the game in its current incarnation.
I was hoping a podcast would do this type of feature (the Winvasion podcast for Warhammer invasion did a look back at the pack, a retrospective chapter pack review that "reviewed" old chapter packs in the context of the meta at the time and todays meta for example).
I really enjoyed this cast!
Great episode guys.
It was also the time when several well known good Baratheon players abandoned the game. TLS was coming around the corner same time as Targ box so Baratheon players were waiting for TLS, Heir to the Iron Throne and Threat from the East. However the FAQ made Heir House Targaryen only and TLS was restricted with Val (who deserves to be restricted) so many saw that Baratheon was weakened even before it actually got good.
As someone who was testing a Heir Baratheon build at the time I can see why the change was made so quickly, the deck was able to consistently win on turn 2 and in some cases 1 without much interaction with opponent.
Awesome retrospective, I'll take these "filler" episodes any day. Lovin' the interviews!
I know Istaril mentions it early in the podcast, but do you think the Star Wars FAQ update means we might get a 5.1 update during AGoT Regionals? That was my first thought when I saw FFG post the new RL for that game. What does everyone else think? Will Bloodthirst continue to besmirch the name of AGoT for the rest of the year?
Nice episode, I am a big fan of the show.
We had a regional recently in the North West, all stats have been added to the annals of castle black.
First of all, thank you all for the comments! It's a relief to hear the episode was well received, given the timing troubles in getting it out to you guys.
tehkernel: It's a possibility, but it's also a little early for any such kind of action. While bloodthirst is widely perceived to be an NPE, it also really hasn't dominated the meta-game yet. In the two weeks since MGTS's stellar BT performance, it's won a single event out of the nine I have records for. Obviously, that's not the only metric we should be tracking (and, since North America has, historically, less house loyalty and more net-decking, the problem may worsen as we hit North American regionals).
Personally, my gripe is more about the increasing ease of plot cycling (Arianne being but the latest example).
Anyway, we've seen the meta quite resiliently bounce back from the last onslaught of Bloodthirst, I'd certainly err on the side of giving it a little time to evolve here too... so I'd wait till the pre-gencon FAQ unless something really drastic emerges.
If I remember correctly, there was no update pre-Gencon last year was there? I thought each FAQ was supposed to be through the whole season culminating in Worlds, so I guess my question answered itself. If FFG updates the FAQ pre-Gencon, that'll be fine. We can see how everything shakes out at Regionals in the meantime.
I just think Bloodthirst and/or Rivers and/or plot-cycling shenanigans should be hit before Nationals, and certainly before Worlds. I thought last year there was no update pre-Gencon, only pre-Worlds, but I could be misremembering. I am known to do that quite often.
There was a pre-GenCon update. Remember TLV?
