Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Peter W. Harren AGOT 2011 Podcast Game of Thrones
Click here for the podcast. In this week's episode, Istaril and Darknoj start by discussing a pretty busy week in the world of AGOT, with some brief details on both the New York City and Polish regionals. With the help of Peter W., we go over the new cycle announcement by FFG, and then, in lieu of our promised Baratheon cast (we explain why!) we bring you our second "AGOT retrospective" - this time with 2011 Stahleck Joust champion Harren. Please keep in mind at time of recording, we were in FAQ4.2 and the C&D cycle had just released it's first CP. Finally, in the closing comments, we go over what promises to be a very busy week in the regional season!

Awesome retrospective, guys. I am loving the interviews with Champion card creators. Excited to hear the discussion on Bara next week, but I suppose the Wardens cycle announcement had to be addressed. That was kind of a shocker--I was getting worried we may not even get another cycle!
I don't remember it coming up, but did you all discuss if Choke is a viable option in today's meta or not? Personally, I feel like it's a dead theme post-Kingsroad cycle. And as the Wardens spoiler showed, access to great resource cards is only going to get easier.
So do you guys have an opinion on where Choke stands in today's meta game?
Patrick R. won with HoD: Longship Maiden's Bane. I hope I didn't mispeak on the show...
Edit: Phew, double checked. I didn't get it wrong on the cast.
I think in today's meta game choke can be very good. Especially if its paired with hand control. Sure people are drawing more cards but if they cant play them they wont do much for them. Its amazing the problems even a light gold choke can cause some decks. Don,t discount a good choke deck from winning a major event. I think a song of ice GJ already did in fact.
Song of Ice, a fairly straightforward choke deck, won the Minnesota Regional (27 people). That said, choke has to take on a different flavour from what it did traditionally in order to counter the fact that your opponent is much more likely to draw into the cards they need to break the choke (thanks to Rivers).
And, of course, if suffers from it's usual vulnerability to Burn decks.
Edit: Too much time spent editing, Jon beat me to it. Choke with hand control has to be the answer, I think.
I agree that light choke is very effective and helps those Winter builds a lot, but the ASoI decks I've run into aren't necessarily focused on Choke as the main theme--it's always a sub-theme that's helpful when it's there but isn't necessary to win games.
So I guess I should clarify and say that I think the days of Choke (and only Choke) as a deck theme are probably over. I mean, is it even worth running Burned & Pillaged in today's meta? Probably not. That's the point I was making.
I totally agree that elements of Choke can be helpful in any given Greyjoy deck, and that is probably where Choke as a play style sits in the current meta. I just don't see a deck focused solely on Choke (like Harren's 2011 deck) winning very many games in 2014. Which, I should also clarify, is probably a good thing for the state of the game.
But I am curious if other players feel the same way? Could Choke in the form of GJ KoW come back and win a big tournament? If so, can it do it running B&P?
I have to agree with you in that a pure choke deck with no other theme would have a lot of trouble in today's environment with the rivers. Know if the rivers where to go bye bye..who knows...
I'm the only Championship level player in the world. That's a great way to look at it!
Really looking forward to the Baratheon build you guys have cooked up. I just started playing very recently and it's sad to hear my favorite house hasn't been doing that well.
Screw you guys, firstly for panning Dockside Brothel and secondly for confusing it with Volantis Inn. That card is tier one and was an important feature of my Highgarden deck, and now I'm sad ;_;.
You're right, my apologies to Volantis Inn for confusing it with Dockside Brothel. It's a much better card.
