Beyond the Wall, Season 1 Episode 20

Beyond the Wall Baratheon Istaril Darknoj Tali wwdrakey Jcwamma livingend Podcast Game of Thrones

In this week's episode, Istaril and Darknoj start by discussing some key results from this week's tournaments. Inthe final installment of our FAQ series, we feature House Baratheon - this season's underperformer. Rather than rehash tired old builds, we get Tali S., who went 6-0 with Bara in NYC to show off his Baratheon solution, and, with "The Conspiracy", build another Bara deck that could boost their fortunes. Finally, in the closing comments, we go over this next week's upcoming tournaments

Errata:
-Italian nats was 73 people, not 72
-French nats was 111 for joust (90 for melee)
-Forgot to mention the Padis regional, in Spain, which Tarkin took with a BT, defeating a Targ TMP in the finals.

Melisandre's Favor 3

I was really looking forward to this episode, to get an idea for a Baratheon deck for our german regional season. Instead i got 3 of 4 KotHH with rivers, which both are not available here. What a shame. ;(

The TMP-deck looks like a best of Bara-dudes with some standing, control through chains and city-plots. I was tinkering around myself with an Tyrell/Maester-Deck with the new Randyll Tarly, but everything is so damn expensive.

Curious about your talk and ideas in the podcast, I am going to listen to it this evening.

It's ironic that right after you recorded this, Ivan Migliavacca went and took down the 73 player field at the Italian National Championship with a Bara Knights of the Realm.

Ironic? I'd rather say 'wonderful'. The Baratheon stats in Annals this Regionals season have been quite... brutal. That ~0.7 qualification ratio (compared to all other non-Neutral Houses being ~1.1-1.2) translates to your chances of making the cut increasing by around 50% simply when switching away from the Baratheon House card (to anything except Neutral Faction).

Darkblue - sorry! It's very hard for us to judge the German cardpool's metagame. It doens't help that we have no information from the Regional in Thueringen! If it's any consolation, those 3 KotHH decks are all versions of the same deck - the feature is primarily meant to highlight the process of taking a first draft and making it tournament worthy. I think that some of the discussions we have will still be of interest to you.

Crouton - we mention that specifically! We were extremely happy to see Ivan preform well with another Bara deck, and hopefully start  to see a Bara resurgeance.

I've edited the decklists above for some clarifications where the set/house identifier might be of use.

There is no reason to feel sorry. The german cardpool is just so twisted, that it is sometimes really funny how big the differences are compared to the english card pool. ;)

I just hoped, because in the earlier installments you specifically had chosen 3 different decks per house and gave advice and tips. Is it a testament for House Baratheon, that  there are now only 2 different options? (Although Ivan showed how to win a big tournament with some good'old knights ;D)

Well, as we state in the cast, Bara was getting hammered in the stats. We thought it needed special treatment - rather than giving three decks that are out there but don't seem to be working, we put a team together to assemble a single new deck we felt could really be competitive. We were lucky to find Tali as well to add a second deck.

All that said, it was a very good weekend for Bara - they took second (Black Sails) at Chicago, first in Italy, second in swiss (HoD: Huntress) in Chile, top 2 (Wildlings) in Stoke. Let's hope it's the turning point for Bara!

Between your elegant pronunciations of all things foreign and darknoj's butcherings of melee and maester, I don't know how to say anything anymore!

My Bara Rush Deck got 3rd in the Swiss in Chicago. I ran into the Bara blacksails, and he had some really solid Anti-Rush tech in his deck. I think I would have done a lot better against any of the other 7 who made the cut, but so it goes. There was someone who was running Martell conquers Bara. It missed the cut at 3-2.

I might take the same deck to the Iowa, so I am not going to post the whole thing, but it is Baratheon conquers Lannister. The core of the DNA for it was Francico's Gen-con deck from last year, tweaked for the new cards/restricted list. It is at its heart a Classic Noble Rush, but it is using the Lannister tech for draw and some control.

Hahaha, I second that, NedStark. I think Jon is doing g it on purpose just to mess with people.

Given that I haven't heard the word "Maester" pronounced correctly in a single podcast yet, I'm not sure anyone can comment on that!

Myster (as in Maestro) or Meester (as in daemon) could both be acceptable. Mayster is not.

Why is "may-ster" incorrect?  That's how I have heard it pronounced on the show and that's how I've read it to be pronounced phonetically per other online sources.

Great episode. Love hearing deck talk. Cant get enough of it. Especially hearing from the AGOT all stars in this episode.

We hope to have them on in the future again.

I really liked the team discussion on a single list, very interesting with some more in-depth analysis.

is Beyond the Wall on Twitter?

No... I'm too much of a luddite. In addition to posting everything here to cardgamedb, and taking advantage of it's rss feed, we only have a Facebook page and gmail account.

We do check our facebook regularly, and keep it fairly updated - so I imagine it'd serve roughly the same purpose as a twitter, without the duplication of effort on my part.

Chicago Regional had Bara Conquest (Lanni) #3 in Swiss out of 32 players. Knocked out in the quarterfinals by a Bara Black Sails which I think got eliminated in the semifinals.

Just wanted to congratulate Tali on his Bara Maesters deck. I ran a similar build in a Store Championship and wanted to bring it back a couple of months ago, but after the last FAQ took away Mel's Scheme and Preston I basically declared it dead and moved on. Maybe if I'd stuck with it I'd have made the cut ;).

@Bomb you say tomayto I say tomahto.

Since VonWibble is from the UK he will correctly pronounce ;-)

paediatrician as peediatrician

encyclopaedia as encyclopeedia

Curriculum Vitae as Curriculum Vitee

While I follow the above pronunciations, as a Scot I would pronounce ae in isolation as "ay". As in the Scottish town Ae. And usually say "Mayster" even though I have to give myself a bruise and report to the pronunciation police afterwards.

Ah cannae wait fur independence man ;-)
