Beyond the Wall, Season 1 Episode 25

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Peter W. Tagore FAQ Podcast AGOT

In this week's episode, Darknoj is back! He and Istaril discuss this week's official announcement, and the results of the penultimate week in regional season! Then, given the (presumed) pending FAQ, we're joined by Peter W. to discuss the state of the meta and our picks for this upcomming FAQ. Finally, we list the tonne ton of tournaments this coming weekend to close off the regional season, including having Tagore tell us about the Battle of Blackwater Bay.

I'd like to add that our segment with Peter W. was recorded before the 2C1C episode on the same topic aired. Any similarities are (depending on how much you like or dislike Beyond the Wall/2C1C) either purely coincidental, a case of dastardly spying from the 2C1C people, proof that great minds think alike, or futher evidence that the community's expectations of this FAQ are fairly uniform.

*ton.

I stand corrected - edited above accordingly! Apparently in the figurative use (and not as an actual measurement) a "ton" is correct. I think this is a case of ambiguity and inconsistent templating which should be addressed in an erratum to the OED for clarity.

I'm not sure who this Peter W. guy is, but I agreed with almost everything he said.

Peter is one of the top players from the Montreal Meta (a very strong meta). He has been on the show before a few times.

I expect the cover art for the Vale will be used for a card somewhere down the line. Note that An Opening Gambit from this set is the cover for the 1st pack in the cycle for example.

Congrats on your 25th episode guys!

Also could come off:

Cyvasse (especially if TRV goes on)

Select Furies

Regarding Wheels Within Wheels:

It'll be 100x worse than Arianne. Cycling into Fear after you marshal, or Blockade after you marshal, or Manning in the middle of challenges, or Valar after they marshal, or the Aftermath after they marshal, or any number of ridiculous tricks. It's the timing that makes it bad. Yeah, there's a lot of cancel, but still I'm worried.

Did Lannister really need this boost? Perhaps so, but man alive, Wheels is terrifying.

Regarding Desperate Measures:

I've thought this card was broken since it was printed. The variance-smoothing for no downside is enough, let alone the combo potential. I never was a fan.

We actually discussed this on the cast, but cut it in the interests of time (And that it had already been mentioned on 2C1C). I'm sure we'll feel stupid if they actually do come off the list...

I think we came to the conclusion that Sun/Lion/Stag wouldn't be auto-includes at all anymore, Dragon is borderline because King's Landing Coup is great, but I'd probably err on the side of caution with Dany wrecking boards at the moment, and Kraken/Wolf have to stay on, at least until that Siege Preparations plot comes out.

Well, in keeping with the trend, last time we discussed an emergency FAQ, it came out immediately thereafter... so in keeping with the "most rapidly invalidated episode", the new FAQ is up - but doesn't come into effect until August 1st!

We keep trying, but I think he's either actually actually always busy when we'd be available, or blowing us off...

~You guys should discuss the FAQ immediately after GenCon so a new one is released the next day.

Alex, you can start adding to your wish list for the next FAQ with "Game of Cyvasse" on the restricted list being corrected to "A Game of Cyvasse".

For Blackwater Bay, we have decied that the New FAQ (5.2) iwill be in effect. We have decided that, as we want a fresh (mostly river-free), new meta, and because the vast majoity of registrants have indicated a preference for a new FAQ to be legal, that it WILL be in effect for the tournament for both the joust and the melee. Please take that into consideration and adjust your decks accordingly.

We have decided to use this FAQ in spite of the "Activation date" of the FAQ for two reasons. Firstly, it is because we view the activation date as an attempt by FFG to keep regionals on a level playing field. As we aren't a regional, we felt that there is no point working with a now outdated FAQ, and we wanted to provide players with a fresh, and interesting new experience. Secondly, and more importantly, the majority of players (85%) indicated on their registrantion form that they wished for a new FAQ, released the week of the touranment to be in effect.

If you are in desperate need of cards to finish deckbuildng, both myself and James will have our collections at the tournament that you can borrow.

Hi Darknoj,

Could you post the link to the video(s) that you mentioned that were uploaded by "Jesus?" I didn't know anyone was recording our tournaments.

Hey meeks23,

Like i said in the show i am unsure where he is from, so it could be another play group. He posts them on his facebook page to friends only, so i don't want to link them to the world with out his permission. He friend me a month or so ago but the videos i saw where not in english nor could i see more then peoples hands. I doubt very much that some one is filming your group with out knowing it must be another group somewhere else in the world. Unlike Alex i suck at figuring out where things are really from. ;)

We keep trying, but I think he's either actually actually always busy when we'd be available, or blowing us off...

I am busy when you're available, and Jon is asleep when I'm available.

Also, they've been having trouble raising enough funds for my appearance fee since 2C1C set the bar so high when I guested with them 2 years ago :)

Darknoj,

Yeah, I asked around. I don't think it was us. Haha! But now we're thinking of capturing matches in our Regional on video.

if you do make sure to share it with me :)

Interestingly I disagree with the Mel's Favor restrict for Melee. I feel like cards like Mel's Favor, Dragon Horn and Ygritte are all there out free because it pushes the melee out of the mold where people mostly play decks where the power goes on characters. Considering how Valar isn't run as heavily in melee those renown characters need more downsides on them as they can live on the board far longer.

I completely agree with this.  I haven't played at a final table in Melee, but based on what I hear, characters that claim or hold on to power is what a lot of Melee rush decks seem to win with.  If the existence of Mel's Favor being in the meta game can help drive players away from these types of builds, I'm all for it.  If it doesn't change how players approach competitive Melee tournaments, then I don't think a player should complain about Mel's Favor beating them on the turn it steals a character with a lot of power on it.  Either learn to spread your power around more evenly or learn to win with a deck that doesn't lose as easily to Mel's Favor.

I would like to see what comes of the Gencon Melee tournament.  Will players build decks with Mel's Favor in mind or will they try to win with stacking power on characters?
