Beyond the Wall, Season 2 Episode 30

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Staton Podcast Game of Thrones CPs1-3

This week, we go over some news, all of which pales in comparison to the knowledge that 2.0 is on the boat (as of 24/08). To talk 2.0, we bring on long-time player Staton, and go over the announcement articles for the first 3 chapter packs. How do we feel about the direction the game will be going in, in the early days? Finally, we close off, on time (to our surprise), with a few closing comments.

Erratum:
-Apparently this *is* a big weekend for Thrones. The fraught-with-difficulties Spanish nationals are this weekend, as are the Australian ones.

Alex, I think you need to impose a limit of one tab per browser for John.

Great episode guys, focused solely on The Only Game That Matters: AGOT 2.0 (except for the UK Nationals bit - but who cares about that island).

A tiny error on Maester Aemon being loyal. Decks like Lanni Banner Watch are viable, making non-loyal The Watch Has Need potentially very attractive as non-loyal Rangers (Ranging Party, Royce, Benjen) and Stewards (Jon, Aemon, reducer) become more common. The design of that non-loyal event troubles me when FFG have been so cautious in other areas. It will be possible to build mostly Ranger aggro builds once card pool expands (e.g. Will), with Old Forest Hunters (ranger) to discard for gold in 2 Counting Coppers turns to get back down to 10. Seems insanely dangerous text...

Surely the 1 per deck Limit Targ attachment is granting Stormborn (and Bastard probably)? May even be non-loyal so that Dragon text becomes relevant in any Banner Dragon builds (although still can't put it on Jon). Horribly high variance, whatever the card is (unless it's waste of space cards like the 3 Dragon Eggs).

I find myself agreeing with Istaril on Lord of the Crossing. By the time we get to pack 3, there will be support of all 3 icons in each faction and we already have balanced NA decks like Lanni NA. The CGDB poll seems to think Martell or Greyjoy (I don't see how Greyjoy covers INT) but Tyrell seems to be the big winner from this agenda for so many reasons. We shall see...

I liked Staton's idea of "delayed Knight Rush" in Martell (Banner Stark I assume if Jory is not loyal) as it fits the Burst Power Gain theme. I always found "off the blocks" Rush like Conquest Martatheon or Noble Cause to be disempowering, far worse than Bloodthirst or even Choke in my books (which at least gave you a game, not a "was that it?" feeling of random nuts draws). So if they have redesigned Rush to be mid-game surprise win, that would be awesome.

Great episode, loved all the contrary opinions, just a shame it's so restrained, so Canadian (but we can't have it all). Watched the Tiny Grimes casts - now there is an opinionated big-mouthed personality! Don't agree with what he says often but very entertaining. Get him on your show! (Or maybe the new co-host of White Book...)

Edit/Erratum: Apparently this *is* a big weekend for Thrones. The fraught-with-difficulties Spanish nationals are this weekend, as are the Australian ones.

Chapter pack links in proper order. Will not listen again.

More seriously, it looks like this the cycle that will make NW very strong. I've found them to be pretty weak out of the box. With the shallow cardpool, in my opinion, the defense theme is much harder to pull off. The plot plus ambush tricks like Thorne (and perhaps the semi-spoiled weapon) make defensive play much stronger. This makes me very happy for I really, really wanted to love the NW out of the core experience and so far that has not been the case.

I am so excited for the first cycle to be in our hands. I WANT it. I need some variety outside the core and it hasn't even been released yet!

I'm glad that Alex is defending the new agenda because I enjoy hearing the pros and cons of cards. I am on the fence about it. I think it could be great for some houses and completely ignorable for others.

Good show guys. Me and the lady enjoyed it.

On Jon's issue with some NW-characters not being monocons:

In fact, the characters who are bicons also have two traits:

Ser Wymar Royce is also a Knight, Ranging party is also an Army, Ser Allisar Thorne will also be a Knight. Old Bear does not have any NW-trait.

The only two exception here are in fact Benjen Stark and Will, who have only the Ranger-trait, but are bicons.

Maybe that eases your unimaginable pain. Also, I will open a can of pity for you, that you have such a long waiting time from getting your Coreset until the chapter packs are released. There are other countries where we still only can imagine how cool it will be to play game... :X

While Stag Lord was also known to be Targ player, he was most vocal about Baratheon issues in the begining of 1.0 in the old FFG boards. Maybe he jumped to targ because Baratheon had some burn during the ccg days.

He jumped to Targ because he loved Daeny in the books.

I don't think a Bran that triggers off "dream" cards would be a terrible idea.
you could have:

Greendreams
Wolf Dreams
Call of the Three-Eyed Crow
Prophecies could fall under the dream trait
Warg-type abilities could also fall under it.

The real issue is that he would be very event-dependent; an ability that let you tutor every time you played a Dream would be really interesting. something like

Bran Stark

House Stark, Non-Loyal
2G
1Str
No Icons
Lord
Response: After you play a card with the Dream trait, Look at the top three cards of your deck. Put one in your hand, and the other two at the bottom of your deck.

Whoa there. I did put the results from the Brawl in the Annals. I also posted them. You guys were just recording early is all. ;)

Also, I am taking the gravest possible exception to you severely misrepresenting my character in a public forum by calling me "not lazy" on air. It's slanderous, is what that is (or was it libelous? I can never get the two straight).

Thank you again for donating Beyond the Wall alternate art cards to the prize pool for the Brawl. They went to Mr. T., who seemed raher grateful for getting them.
