Martell First Cycle Review

Got time for a big ass article about Martell?

Who am I kidding, of course you do!

What can I really say about Martell? Thematically, the most badass house in the entire (book) series. From Oberyn Martell’s ferocity in battle to Doran’s careful planning and ability to think ahead, there are many facets that embody the Princes and Princesses of Dorne. Always one step ahead of their opponents, they can lure you into a sense of victory before snatching it away at the last moment. This matches both their personas in the story, as well as their play style in this game. With a variety of ways to punish their opponent for winning challenges, paired with a lot of tricks that turn their enemies’ best characters into glorified (and expensive) Iron Thrones, the House of Martell are always working the Long Plan.

For this week’s review, we have one of the Midwest’s best Martell players, Brandon Zimmer. I won’t waste much time introducing him, as he does that already in his article, but I will say that he has been a fixture in the community for quite some time.

Here is his take on how Martell did in this past cycle (spoiler alert: they got a lot of great cards).

To top it all off, the featured image for this article is not only an extremely nice painting, but also one of the best quotes in the entire book series. I was going to find a funny picture for Martell but, honestly, if you want to laugh (or cry) at the house of Martell, you can just go watch the television series. It is time to return dignity to Martell.

Looking at this image and remembering the scene from the book, and then remembering the show... Shame!

Now lets read the article. :)

Agree with all of your writings, but I'd add Arianne Martel in the mix of best cards available. Especially if you splash Rose. Even on fealty Martel, you can pull so many tricks that it's very game defining.

I agree she is but she was also in the core set

Thanks for this.

I haven't played a lot of Martel but now I will try them out. :)

Ah, sorry then. Standing corrected. Thought that first cycle contained core cards as well.

Thanks a lot. Really nice article, wish it was a little longer ;)

I really liked those articles, but I somehow agree with HidaHayabusa (even though he was wrong): it would have been interesting to consider the core cards in the articles as well to get the big picture

Thanks for the article Brandon, really good read. I'm really surprised to read your review about Martell's icon removal attachments. I agree that Attainted is a bit overrated, most times intrigue challenges are the less important ones unless you want to play tears or use Tyene, but in that case Nymeria and max 1x Attainted is all you need; on the other hand, I strongly believe that Imprisoned is Martell's best card in the first cycle. It single-handedly lets you deal with the most beefy and dangerous characters from any faction and helps avoiding Put To The Sword, especially early game, when you really want to go second and get control of the game. I never leave home without 2x Imprisoned :D

Instead, I have dropped His Viper Eyes from my decks (it was a hard choice) in order to make room for other non setuppable cards, such as Nightmares; I usually want my cards to be immediately effective when I need them. without waiting to lose a challenge. Moreover, at 0 gold is way too easy to cancel

Those icon removal attachments are such a huge pain in the ass haha. I don't have to deal with them as much because a lot of my characters can't take attachments, but as soon as I play Old Bear boom. All 3 attachments are put on him haha. I think they are all very strong. I personally think Condemned is the best of the bunch. Power challenges are so important to this game. Removing the Red Viper's or Tywin's or Balon's power icon can make winning power challenges so much easier. Paired with Nymeria, you can basically cut power challenges out of your opponent's challenges whenever you need to.

That's how you win games.

Yep the icon strippers are not overrated, they actually feel pretty busted. Between them and Nymeria you can really lockdown a board, just like how Bara can with kneel. It's not a great feeling being on the other side of it, though.

After playing fair number of games with icon removing attachments, I don't think any of them is better than the other two, it just depends on the matchup and board state. They shine brightest when you can keep resetting the board with FSOW and Wildfire (probably good with Varys but I don't have him in my decks), and they'll become even better when Valar comes out.

I think they are overrated just because people are rating them too high lol (the meaning of overrated) Just because I think they are overrated doesn't mean they are bad by any means. I put them at around a 4/5 while a lot of people treat them as clear 5/5. There are many decks playing Martell where I wouldn't include any of them and I know I am in the minority there.
