The Hoth invasion is complete. I have (and I think I'm not alone) greatly anticipated The Executor Arrives (#66) objective set. This article will focus on this new objective set, card by card, why ISB Liaison is the best card in the Force Pack (OK, Sith Holocron is playable), and showcase 5 new builds.

1) What makes The Executor Arrives (66-1) fantastic?

First, the Sith objective set produces 2 resources and is non-restrictive. I love Trust Me (71-1) with Lando, but it is a restrictive objective set. Any objective set that forces me into a certain build is always a pain to work around (See #4 Journey to Dagobah). Darkside decks, and specifically Sith and Navy builds, do well with 6 or more resources. Any objective set that has 2+ resource generation is always the first thing I check for in new Force Packs.

On to the cards in the objective:

Executor (66-2): The Spike player in me jumps up and down ready to smash with this card. A week of testing and the card has yet to disappoint. Short of a Blockade Runner smashup, the Executor is basically indestructible. The sacrifice damage ability is good, but the non-edge dependent unit damage is the real star here. This is an expensive unit, but I believe is actually under costed; 10 would have been a more fair cost, as there are at least 6 cards that cheat this in for cheap (see Sith Holocron and deck list #4). In the end game, this ship finishes off LS objectives quickly.

Sith Holocron (66-5): At zero resource cost, this card is utterly overpowered. It allows DS players to play Palpatine for 3, Vader for 2, Executor for 5, and unlike objectives like (Discard X cards to reduce cost), the cost can be zero: Emperor’s Guard for free, Force Lightning for free. The Holocron even has 2 pips for edge battles. The only downside to this card and (Endless Resources) is your hand size for edge battles, starts to dwindle quickly.

Aggression (66-5): The jury is still out on this one. I haven't gotten much play from it and honestly don’t really care considering how good the rest of this objective set is.

x2 ISB Liaison (66-3): I am saving the best card in this pod for last. Yes, you read that correctly. Let me outline the brilliance that is ISB Liaison. At one neutral resource cost this card is everything that, say Twe’lik Loyalist (#1 A Hero’s Journey) is not:
  • It has defensive non-edge dependent unit damage
  • Can flip the force dial on turn one
  • Triggers Executor with its sacrifice
  • Gives you information about your next draws or your opponent’s next draw
  • Cycles a card into your hand
  • Comes in pairs in the objective

This card is the all-star (or at least most efficient) in this entire Force Pack (The latest Luke Skywalker is a close second). ISB Liaison is not glamorous, but has so much value for just 1 resource. FFG would do well to give more cards like this to LS (E.g. Tauntaun with several abilities for 1 resource).

Overall, “The Executor Arrives” is a well-tuned set that uses 4 sacrifice cards in coordination with the Executor unit. Even if you don’t use the sacrifice trigger, the non-Executor cards standalone well.

Shifting gears, let’s look at some possible lists (Ideas, vs. set deck lists)

We start with the knee jerk Sith control Vader/Palpatine list and add Executor. There isn't much friction here as Sith Holocron does a ton of work. You could easily pull Darth Vader or Admiral Motti and go with Defense Protocol. You will hard cast Executor more often than you would think. Sith Libraries, Admiral Motti, 1 and 2 cost units that produce resources, and 4/10 objectives with 2 resources makes this a powerful deck.

2) Executor for Sale
Scum and Villainy affiliation

x2 Lucrative Contract
x2 Trandoshan Terror
x2 The Executor Arrives
x2 The Emperor’s Web
x2 Counsel of the Sith

This deck has 4 Twist of Fates, Palpatine, and Executor. Its resource base is great: 6/10 sets produce. Corrupt Official can give your opponent fits as well. As always, I prefer DS decks that pack a lot of strong 2 cost units. This deck has a lot of that and great top end units as well.


3) Maximum Sacrifice

Initial testing of this deck has left me wanting more, or a variance. You are building around the Executor’s sacrifice mechanic with the Biting Cold. There is a touch of Hoth theme here with the Snowtroopers and Wampa’s. This deck struggles to consistently play the Executor early, like turns 2-3 consistently.

4) Big Navy

x2 The Executor Arrives
x2 Death and Despayre
x1 Imperial Command
x2 Deploy the Fleet
x1 Imperial Blockade

Play capital ship units, often and early.

5) The Capital Grill:

I’m pretty sure this is a B-league deck, but wanted to do a throw back with Heart of the Empire, which has been collecting dust in the box.

Really going to blast the Twi'lek Loyalist of all cards? One cost with a tactics icon is awesome, he forces you to block him and win an edge battle. There is absolutely zero reason to bash him over some other one cost cards.

Also you listed the Holocron twice in your card review. Calling it overpowered in one case and not-used in the other. I'm assuming you meant Aggression.
I dont think there is a bad card in this set. The Holocron is the most abusive card in the set. Aggression paired with Force Lightning and Chokes is yet another removal card for DS. ISB Liason is pretty good, I like using it before I destroy an objective to peak at their top objective, I dont want to destroy a Trust Me or Raise the Stakes with another on the way.

The Executor is a great finisher for the DS. I have had games where I would have lost the next turn if I didnt get to play Executor, it just wins games out of nowhere.

Overall, I agree with most of your assesment of this objective set.

I don't understand why you don't like aggression. I can't wait to play that card. With a lot of targetted damage it will be easy to kill all these cheap units and kill a big one with aggression. And it can trigger Vader and its cost can be reduced to 0 by the palpatine objective.

Aggression is a great card, but it's only good against decks with a few units. Most the time your opponent is going to sack their puny 1 or 2 cost unit. I haven't played it with Vader. I will tonight in testing.

aggression is amazing. even more so when the executor is out. you both sac a unit, and then you do 2 more damage to whatever you want with executor, and if vaders out as well, you do a 3rd damage. i love it for 1 cost.

Good article. I have found the Pod to be one of my favorites in the entire game. :)
Good stuff on the Liaison. I agree the Twi'lek Loyalist is a weak card. Totally edge dependent and no real way to damage objectives.
And yet has a tactics icon so it easily forces your opponents hand when they are lacking in that area, edge dependent or not. There is zero reason to complain aboutthat for cost 1. What are you really expecting at that cost point?

Honestly, when you consider all the tools the Sith already have, it's not hard to get the best out of Aggression. Not only can it be free thanks to the Emperor's pod, but with stuff such as Chokes, Shockwave, Vader's and Executor's reactions, it's rather easy to clear the small fry before using it to take out a big unit.

Agreed on the rest of the set, although I can't say I share your opinion on the Twi'lek. White tactic icons are just as powerful as black ones when they come in such cheap packages. Do you waste a unit to defend against him or let him go through and focus your important units?
Jawas are better than Twileks and are 0-cost :) But Twileks are very good 1-cost units.
Twelik Loyalist usually just dies pre-strike to any number of DS cards. I agree with many of you, I am underrating Aggression. I got beat down with it last time I played. And really, it doesn't need to have Executer out to get value at one cost.
Not so much what I would expect but would like. I would like the card to lose the edge enabled tactics and edge unit damage and replace it with 1 blast damage icon. Very few of the Jedi affiliation units have this icon.

Um no. Jawas are not better. You dont care if you win or lose an engagement with the Loyalist. If you lose with the Jawa you get all of them back into your hand.

Apples to oranges. DS wants small free unit to turn force turn one. LS needs objective damage. I don't think they really compare.
Everyone keeps saying the Twilek Loyalist would be better with objective damage, no it wouldn't.

The beauty of the card is in forcing your opponent to block it and win an edge battle or have a more integral defense piece locked down. Tactics icpns for the LS are absurdly powerful if your opponent hasn't found their own yet, especially on a essentially disposable character. Given the sets those little guys are in they serve a fantastic role of opening lanes for Red 5 or Luke.

If it had a blast damage icon instead, it wouldn't be able to draw a block effectively, and in turn forces you to win the edge battle to get anything from the card as everything kills it. The LS needs objective damage, but not on 1 health chuds. The tactics icon is far more useful.

Going up against a Sith control deck means you will likely lose the majority of edge battles. The black icon guarantees that it will get through assuming it survives.

But as SirKhan stated above the TL will usually just die pre-strike to any number of DS cards anyway.

Oh, and if it doesn’t draw a block effectively because of the blast icon then that turns into two objective damage due to the unopposed bonus. All from a 1 cost unit.
I personally have been able to make Aggression one of my favorite cards in the pod, especially early game. If, on first turn, your LS opponent throws down a single large cost unit, just sacrifice your crappiest unit (or play one second turn) and then play aggression to kill it the first turn it is in play. I've gotten both Han and Luke in this way already. I would say a 1-2 cost unit of ANY type and the 1 cost aggression is a good trade for either of those. Can set it up later game too by using Executor Sacrifices to clear out other units and then aggression to hit the last remaining big unit.
