Podcast A Game of Thrones LCG
Resources have always been uniquely handled in the Game of Thrones card game - and even within that uniqueness, there is a vast chasm between the design philosophies of the 1st and 2nd Editions. From where do those differences originate, and what future designs do they hint at? Well, let's take a look! This time it's a special double-length episode, to make up for the brief hiatus since episode 4.In the 2nd Edition of the Game of Thrones Living Card Game, we're in a unique position - thousands of card have come before us, but only a few are available for play right now. As new cards come out, what are the chances that we'll see some old abilities and mechanics revisited? The Insight and Renown podcast posits that it's pretty damn near 100%.
As a 12+ year veteran of this game, I've seen a lot of cards come and go, and thought it might be interesting to take a look at the history of this game, and see what cards and themes we might see again in the near future. Every episode will highlight one theme or mechanic in 2nd Edition, and look at some of the cards from the CCG era and 1st Edition that might be reprinted, or at least serve as inspiration for a new card.

Very interesting episode, thanks
I played first edition but not the ccg, so I always enjoy hearing about the ridiculous design decisions made in that phase of the game. I almost can't believe that they printed the streets without the '1 per deck' restriction.. but I guess this is FFG.
Something interesting I've noticed in second edition is that non-limited economy locations seem to all be getting the 'Contested' trait - Tourney Grounds has it, and the upcoming White Tree does too. That seems like really clever design, as the designers can seed the cardpool with Contested-hate cards to futureproof against repeatable non-limited economy ever getting out of hand.
It's also wonderfully meta - the presence and power of non-limited economy is a controversial and contested topic among players too
Nice catch, I hadn't noticed that! Definitely another smart, cautious design decision on FFG's part - this way they don't need to act until these locations become a problem, at which point they can issue a bullet card that hits Contested locations.
Might have some collateral damage if some Contested locations don't deserve the hate, of course, but that's life in AGoT 2.0! Thanks for listening!
One thing worth mentioning might be that one way they tried to shift the focus away from the streets was the very introduction of events that cost gold. If you wanted to play something like No Prisoners or Word of Rhllor which both cost 6 gold and had great effects you could just have the reducers as income so things shifted to playing a little more pure gold economy as well.
Ooo, I like that.
Oh, King's Landing, how I miss you. Those Greyjoy location decks...
I was looking back through my ccg rares collection and found all those 4-gold crown attachments. With the upcoming Kings Cycle, are you going to do an episode about King and Queen tech?
