All Things Shagga - The Top Shagga: Beyond the Narrow Sea

Hi, folks, welcome back to All Things Shagga and thanks for sticking with me as I’ve worked my way through my choices on the top five Shagga cards from each and every chapter pack cycle since the LCG was released. This week, we finally catch up to the present day by taking a look at the Beyond the Narrow Sea cycle. So, without further ado, let’s take a look!

House of Dreams (ARotD) - Certainly one of the most controversial cards in a set full of controversial cards, House of Dreams is an agenda that will power a lot of imaginations. As I’ve said before, this is the sort of thing that is currently helping the creative juices flow for quite a few players. For instance, I recently built a Targaryen deck using this with Vaes Dothrak with a Dothraki theme for fun effect. Aside from that, however, there are quite a few locations of a more Shagga than Jaime bent that people will surely be testing with this. For instance Riverrun, The Iron Throne (Baratheon), The Wall (Baratheon), Blackwater Bay, Cersei’s Wheelhouse, Corpse Lake, Gates of Winterfell, and many others will all be experimented with by some enterprising player. In fact, there are so many wacky possibilities with this agenda that I think we’ll likely have to use the comments section to discuss some of the more interesting options. Of course, all that said, I think it is just a matter of time before the top choices become solidified and this moves more firmly into the Jaime camp.


The Kindly Man (VM) - Wow is this ever an awesome engine card! The Kindly Man is surely one of the most impressive of the character-agendas, with a recursion ability that just keeps coming. Frequently, it’s not that hard to win one of those two challenges (on attack or defense! With no strength requirement!), especially with the kill that Stark has available to get pesky defenders out of the way. Once you have the Kindly Man running, you can just keep cycling the beefiest character in any discard pile into play every turn. For most people that I’ve seen, this turns out to be The Viper’s Bannermen. If you can find a way to get the beastly out of house army into your discard pile, bringing back a 7 strength, deadly, stealth army that “draws” two cards each turn really helps turn a game in your direction. Is there anything better to recur? House Umber Berserkers perhaps?


Braavos (VD), Myr (AHM), Norvos (VD), Pentos (CD), Tyrosh (AHM), Volantis (VM) - Ok, so I’m really cheating here and including 6 cards all together for this particular entry. If House of Dreams hadn’t been in this set, then this cycle of unique kingdom locations would have hands down won for most Shagga friendly cards in the set. Those who play often against me know that I have a pretty intense love of dual and out of house cards, and the addition of these locations lets me indulge in this guilty pleasure to a pretty obscene degree. Whether it’s splashing Newly Made Lord for location control, Brienne of Tarth to shut down control effects, or slipping in a few copies of The Viper’s Bannermen as a draw engine, you can do darn near anything you’d like. Conveniently, they can often be chained together to combine houses and traits in order to add multiple discounts and they work extremely well with any of the Treaty agendas by double discounting your out of house stuff. The fact that they provide influence is nothing to sneeze at either. I recently took a deck that used several of these to great effect down to Tulsa, so I’ll almost certainly be writing about that soon when I get back to looking at decklists.

Dragon Egg (AHM) - Sure, it’s fragile. I think we can all agree on that, but can’t we also all agree on the potential here? Being able to give all of your cards that wouldn’t normally have ambush that keyword can be pretty huge, really. Sure, putting it on an opponent’s character does leave you open to an opponent removing the attachment even more easily by killing the character, but it does suddenly give you the ability to trigger Illyrio with 0 cost characters like Refugee of the Plains and Disgrunteld Mercenary. Conveniently, Targaryen also has very efficient recursion in Lady Daenery’s Chambers and Street Waif to keep bringing that Dragon Egg back. Of course, there are also locations with some sweet abilities that could be backbreaking to jump into play like the Dragon Pit.

Much and More (AHM) - For all that I said it wasn’t a top 5 card in the 2 Champs and a Chump review of the A Harsh Mistress chapter pack, I readily acknowledged then and now that it is a superb card to help put together combos. It’s not a great engine or extremely impressive effect by itself, but it really is one of the best ways to keep digging down into your deck in order to assemble the specific pieces of a combo that you’re trying to put together. Bonus points if, like Mr. John Bruno, you can consistently find means to negate the card that you’re putting into your opponent’s hand each time you play it.

So there you have it folks, we’re caught back up on chapter packs. I’ll probably tackle the deluxe expansion boxes at some point, but for now I’m going to let that rest and get back into deck building mode. I’m sure you loyal readers will be glad for the change of pace. Before we move on though, which are your most Shagga location choices to go with House of Dreams? Wouldn't The Viper's Bannermen (PotS) "draw" 4 cards when played with Kindly man. One when Bannermen is played and one when it leaves at end of phase? Making more intimidating when played with Kindly man.
Answering to myself, no you do not get second change to get 2 cards if bannermen are discarded at end of phase. Because end of phase framework action window does not have steps for save /cancel nor for responses. This is stated in FAQ §2.6.

Well you can get 4 cards if bannermen are killed or discarded during challenges phases, but I recal it is more common to get it discarded at end of phase.

I have been playing a Kindly Man deck for a while with the Umber Berserkers, and it is my favorite deck right now. Even if you don't get the Berserkers recurring right away, it is still great to get any non unique from any discard or dead pile for the turn. Sometimes that is just enough.
I've been playing around with a Dragon Egg deck recently. It's not very good at all, but on the subject of things to jump into play with Dragon Egg, my personal favourite was playing Much and More, my opponent being confused and pleasantly surprised when I gave him The Red Viper, then ambushing in Aegon's Hill to take it away. Also, in another game I managed to ambush in The Golden Company, which wasn't good for any particular Shagga reason but definitely was amusing! Unfortunately that game was going so badly for me that my opponent was able to Incinerate them by playing Ally, but it was still worth it.

To toot my own horn for a bit I prototyped a HoD + Drone combo in the latest Scheming on the Sands. I don't know if a Martell HoD + Dorne deck can ever be a Tier 1 but it's definitely a lot of fun.

I've been playing around with a Dragon Egg deck recently. It's not very good at all, but on the subject of things to jump into play with Dragon Egg, my personal favourite was playing Much and More, my opponent being confused and pleasantly surprised when I gave him The Red Viper, then ambushing in Aegon's Hill to take it away. Also, in another game I managed to ambush in The Golden Company, which wasn't good for any particular Shagga reason but definitely was amusing! Unfortunately that game was going so badly for me that my opponent was able to Incinerate them by playing Ally, but it was still worth it.


What was your deck focus with Dragon Egg? I mean, did you have certain cards you were wanting to ambush in with? Do you think that maybe you just need more deck changes? I'm merely curious because while Dragon Egg needs to be drawn and tossed on an opponents card, what were you hoping to ambush in and make combos with that you normally could not?
It's a Griff deck with a fair few attachments and an emphasis on cheap characters and recursion. The idea was to be able to use cards like Disgruntled Mercenary (BoRF) to send the new Illyrio into hyper mode, keeping him alive if possible with Unburnt, and recurring him with To Be A Dragon (for Dead Pile) and Ambush From the Plains/Street Waif/Golden Company (for Discard Pile). Xaro's Home, Bay Of Ice and Meraxes help supplement the draw. To say it's not T1 would be an understatement of large proportions, but it's fun at least.
@Paimen- Yup, most of the time you'll just get two cards because of the inability to respond to the end of phase discard.

@JCWamma- So it actually sounds like that deck is along the same lines of what I was mentioning in the article in regards to Illyrio. Do you have The Long Lances in there? With 0 cost ambush stuff, it seems like you could really abuse their ability to stand things as well.
Yup, 3x Long Lances. I'd post the decklist but I think that has the danger of encouraging people to copy it when they could do much better making it themselves from a starting point of 3x Dragon Egg, 3x Illyrio, 3x Long Lances, Influence Locations and (for the full challenge) 3x Griff.
Hmmm.... how would people feel if I tackle that for a deck here in two weeks?

I'd be interested, although obviously since I've been playing around with a similar deck I've got a vested interest!

@kennon I've got a Griff attachment recursion deck that is super fun as well. If you go down that route for ATS I'll give it a look-see.
I'd definitely be interested. I played around with two different varieties of a Dragon Egg deck and neither of them were really clicking. I'm really interested to see what Targ goodness comes in the next cycle because I think Dragon Egg could be a juicy add if we have enough Naval Enhancement characters. Then Ambush becomes really brutal... jump in a Naval Enhancement character and that thing everyone wants to do with Ambush but can't (ambush in a defender POST-stealth window) suddenly becomes possible.

So, yeah, I'd definitely be interested.
Recursion is probably one of my favorite things to play. I mainly run Baratheon, but Targ is really tempting... plus all the other cool stuff they have. :D
Attachment recursion seems to be the way to go (even if tin link wasn't t in the environment,) since attachments rely on characters, which die often.

Dragon egg is one of those cards that looks really cool, so I`d like to see article about it.

I dunno if they're combo-rific enough to warrant mention, but Banner Bearer (THoBaW) is pretty much all combo, and Greyscale (tHoBaW) opens up terminal burn to Baratheon, if you combo it with other burn, or even use
Melisandre (RoR) to steal that power you let them get.
Me and a group of friends play together pretty much most weeks and we've all settled with our favorite houses, I'm the Targaryen and I'm really looking forward to getting Dragon Egg and Long Lances. I think we've got the first three Narrow Sea Chapter packs so far. So I'd be very interested in the article mentioned above.

I'd love to see that, since I have yet to get a Griff deck to really work well at all...

I use Griff mainly for Claim Soak, but I only run one copy of him.

I'd stick Dragon Egg on their most valuable character that they don't want to loose, so it's up to them to loose a key char or stop you from having ambush :P
