Beyond the Wall, Season 1 Episode 3

Store Championships Istaril Darknoj Beyond the Wall Game of Thrones Podcast

In this week's episode, Istaril and Darknoj address listener feedback and then go through the whole store championship experience on the cast. Discussing the championships, reading the meta, building a deck, analyzing it, and then reporting on how it faired! We apologize that the episode runs long, but felt like cutting this one story into multiple episodes would detract from it. The decklist can be found in the chapter data, or here.

As the cast is an "enhanced" podcast in m4a format, you may have to download it rather than use the default in-browser player. Subscribe using our RSS feed, or by looking us up on Itunes.

Just listened to your first episode. I'm incredibly happy to hear the message about sharing the information. The reason Magic has thrived is sharing the pool of knowledge. I'm very impressed. Look forward to hearing more!
Still listening, but just wanted to say I completely disagree re: wanting alt-art versions of Hungry Mob, Lost Spearman, etc., because if you're running 3 copies of a card I feel like all three copies should be the same. Otherwise it can give information that should be hidden - for instance, you have two copies of Lost Spearman in your hand, one is the alt-art one that got bounced for its effect, and then the other one gets randomly discarded from an intrigue challenge. Now your opponent knows you had two. You could argue that it's not so important for a card like Lost Spearman that you might spam out, but what if it was, say, Red Vengeance, and you know they have one from their Prince's Plans, and the one that gets discarded or played is one with different artwork? I'd much rather the alt-art cards be ones you'd never run multiple copies of for that reason.

Shut uppa you logical face!
James, that's an excellent point, but doesn't actually work against our argument.

If it were a card you'd want 3 of, the card would have inherent value - be tradeable, give you an incentive to win multiple tournaments rather than only 1.

So yes, for participation prizes and the like, being 1 ofs would be fine. But when Jon says "only 4 copies of an alternate art card", then you start to have an element of collector's fever, as well as (further) incentive to play competitively in multiple tournaments.
I feel like the cards you'd want as singles should be rarer, and the cards that you'd want in triplicate should be easier to get. That way there are some that are more prestigious to own, the fact that they are more prestigious to own doesn't affect the likelihood of you being able to actually use them, and there's an incentive to travel to at least three tournaments to pick up three copies of the participation prize card.

Great episode guys.
Lol. Thats funny you guys were talking about current tournament formats. I had a conversation about it at our SC Sat and it has been on the top of my head ever since.

Actually just posted my thoughts on an alternate format right before I started listening to this cast...
Great podcast guys. While I like the quality of voices in the 2C1C podcast (they sound more podcast-y), I think your podcast is much better content-wise. Their podcast is full of sub-par/weird views about the meta and the cards in-general, and I think it is because they don't want to give away their competitive edge (DC-style I suppose); while in your podcast, you freely give away all information and why you choose which cards you decide to ultimately play. This is the right direction for the community if we are to push the limits of this game.

The 2C1C guys are great podcasters and are great players, but I think they have a serious contender on their hands with this podcast.

Thanks for your high praise!

I think you've convinced me completely on the participation prizes. My only remaining gripe is that the incentive to perform as well at subsequent tournaments is diminished (for those people for whom prize support is that incentive, which isn't everyone). Perhaps if the prize selection for Top4 were different for each, and the players got to pick a prize in order of standing?
Alex--great cast. As I said in the Skype chat, I would be interested to hear a more full round-by-round recap to see just how the selections you made in construction played out across yours and jon's matches. Don't be afraid to go back to that well next week if you need to IMO!

We were hoping to do that, but the cast was running so long and we were both exhausted (and I still had to get the cast up!). If there's enough interest, we may record a more detailed summary of how certain key cards performed (Shadows in the South, Blood for Blood, Jhalabar, Hellholt Docks, Ghaston) for next week.

never worry about running long, this was my favorite cast of you guys because of the length. Use to 2c1c so like the longer casts.

so this has clearly taken over as the premier agot podcast now right? seems like the organization, effort and enthusiasm is all there and the community has obviously spoken. well done. cant wait to hear what happens next.
Thank goodness. I can let them take over all the hard work now.
Warning: I'm feeding the troll.

For the record (again), we really are trying to avoid large overlap with 2C1C and carving out our own niche. They bring a larger experience with the game (as evidenced by, say, Kennon pointing out that we missed discussion of one of the older online play platforms), Darryl, a historical perspective that stretches back to the CCG days, a more prominent local meta with more regular play than either of us have, official FFG spoilers, Darryl, experience with several of the other LCGs, and ready access to world champions as well as my personal deckbuilding hero (Greg). That top-table Martell KotHH bannermen deck was a work of art. The longer format also allows them to do some things much better - but again, to distinguish the two casts we chose to opt for a different style.

Kennon has been very supportive and helpful of our efforts, helping me with some of the ropes of podcast editing and disseminating. I still listen to 2C1C every week.

It's also worth noting that they've been reliably present, organized and enthusiastic for a long time. As you pointed out, Dennis, after our first cast, podcasts other than 2C1C have a history of dying out... and while I have no intention of doing that, only one 'cast so far has stood the test of time.
so we're all in agreement then. good.
I would like to know what you used Summoned by the Conclave to fetch in your games. Since you didn't run into A Noble Cause I'm assuming Jhalabar wasn't fetched that often (if ever...), what did you get instead? Arianne? Quentyn? TRV? The suspense is killing me.
ive been playing this deck alot and ive been using it to grab quentyn or a bannermen. its a super fast deck.

I really want to try it out, but now it's been published and advertised making me feel lame for doing so.

Nah, I'll play it anyway =)
Glorious! Absolutely glorious. A podcast with content for those of us who can use all the help we can get. Deck construction? Card interactions? Game theory? You guys rock!

Would you be willing do do something like this more often? Maybe selecting a current 'hot' card, or an archetypal deck and building/rebuid it? There's a lot that can be learned from deconstruction/reconstruction of decks that you could teach. Even taking the deck-du-jour and reverse engineering it to help us mooks understand the inner workings.

Regardless, keep up the awesome work!

Oh, and a side-note: Alternate Art/Full Art of 'useful' cards would be an excellent idea. How about just more copies of the Streets? New Ravens? Even more plots would be nice.
Great episode! As others have mentioned, please don't hesitate to go long! I was a little bummed that you didn't elaborate more on the tourney!
