Beyond the Wall, Season 1 Episode 37

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Podcast AGOT

In this week's admitedly short podcast, we go over some news and a big announcement for the hosts. We're excited! We muse on the designing of champ cards, especially given that Darknoj actually has one to design. Finally, in closing, we discuss some upcoming plans and a big tournament on the horizon. We also turn it into begging for favours from the organizers of said tournament...

Original Article Text (10pm Sunday): This week's episode will be slightly delayed. It should still appear on Monday (Eastern), but due to Canadian Thanksgiving, visiting family, and a day off tomorrow, we're holding off on releasing the cast in the hopes of catching the FAQ. This article will be refreshed (with a new date/timestamp) when the podcast goes up.

Is the alternate art card an incentive to lose against ya'll? That seems backwards.
Well, you shouldn't need an incentive to beat us! Think of it more as a consolation prize for losing to us.... furthermore, as neither of us have ever had more losses than wins, this results in us handing out more cards (hopefully!). Finally, we'll try to think of some other good ways to hand some out that aren't just dependent on being paired with us.

I feel like anyone who potentially ends up with 3 card designs is obligated (in my opinion) to make up for the three lackluster dragon eggs by creating Boots, Ser Pounce, and Lady Mittens. Of course, Lannister may become unstoppable in that case.

On a serious note, If I could make a card tomorrow, I would seriously consider a new Gregor who manipulates the texts of expensive Stark and Martell characters. Assuming WWW gets restricted, I'd like to see a Gregor who might make a competitive build, decked to the nines (cost 4, Prized 2, best stats possible) with a Nedly ability to make Stark or Martell players reconsider just how much they can rely on their Red Vipers, Armys, etc. Talk about shaking up the meta. And this would also encourage the theme of the last cycle (prized), the new cycle (cost 4 and more guys), and give Gregor his time in the sun. In a meta with so much dominant Viper, how is there not a Nedly Gregor to help keep him in check? And that's coming from a predominantly Martell player lol.

If I could make a card, I'd make Sunspear or Who Fears the Grass?

Sunspear

Cost 2

Unique

House Martell, Dorne
Prized 1

Response: After you lose a challenge as the defender, kneel two influence to cancel the claim of that challenge. Then, choose one: kill a character you control, or discard a card from your hand at random, or move one power from your house card to your opponent's house card.

Who Fears the Grass?

Event

Response: After you lose a challenge as the defender, kneel one influence to declare a challenge of your choice as your next player action this round. (Kneel three influence instead to raise the claim of your next challenge by one if the Red Viper is participating.)

I hope these aren't worded too awkwardly, but the idea is the first one allows you to kneel influence to effectively choose how you take your claim; I have left it at two influence an effect due to it's also negation of increased claim. I've considered raising it to cost three; it's a powerful effect, but I also don't want to make it unplayable. I am hoping the prized effect is enough for balance.

The second is supposed to function in a similar effect to Lucas Blackwood: On a lost challenge, it allows you to interrupt a challenge phase with your own challenge. It lets you trigger whatever challenge you like but costs influence instead (this could be changed to, perhaps, an intrigue challenge in Martell flavor). If you choose to instead spend three influence, that next challenge is claim +1 if the Viper is in. ("Who fears to tread upon the grass? But it is the grass which hides the viper, until he may strike.")

Darknoj, you have to incorporate the Melee keyword into your card somehow...

After all you won Canadian Melee, as well as Gencon Melee...

Eddard Stark

Cost 3

Unique

Lord

Mil

Pow

3 Strength

House Stark Only. If Eddard Stark would be killed, instead attach him to your house card as your only agenda with the text "Your unique Stark characters do not kneel to attack or defend Military challenges. Response: After you win a Military challenge as the attacker, draw 1 card"

There totally needs to be a good Ned, and a charagenda seems perfect for him.  The other ones are sometimes playable, but often cut.

Black Walder Frey has been/will always be my dream champ card.

Lannister (possibly Stark too if we're being generous).

House Frey, Traitor,

3 str, Mil, Int, Deadly.

And then an ability along the lines of Challenges (or Any Phase): Name a trait. Until the end of the phase Black Walder Frey gains 1 power each time a character with that trait is killed until the end of the phase.

He's kind of a mix of an anti Robb Stark, and the Joffrey who gains power when Lords are killed. Fits nicely with other Lanni cards like Lion's Gate, and you could use his ability and deadly to force tough decisions for the opponent on Mil claim. Or just name Septon, get draw and power for losing a 1 claim mil challenge.

Ha, or is it awesome that I'm the only unmarried host left?

Also, I believe this was the card that I'd have wanted to make for a champ card, if I ever got the chance.

I really like the "others" agenda idea and the iron bank location idea. Anything that opens the door to more deck building options is a win in my book
