Beyond the Wall Lauren F. wwdrakey Istaril Darknoj New Metas 10 Best decks of the LCG AGOT Podcast
Click here for the podcast. In this week's episode, we run long yet again. I blame the fact that the cores are out, and news along with it - including some rumblings about the FAQ. We then invite "The Fitch that Wins" as we re-record a segment on creating a new meta we did with her way back, that was unfortunately lost to the abyss. It's not as good as the mythical lost segment, but it's still great. Antti "wwdrakey" then joins us for a fun little retrospective on 1.0, where all three of us go through our "10 best decks of the LCG". In our Town Crier segment, we promote Thronestroberfest - and settle on Lauren's new nickname. Finally we close off with our usual tournament round up.

Also, just in case it sounded like I was saying that Britt and I bought all of the prizes for the Boston tournaments, in fact a lot of people donate items for prizes. It's very common for players like Tali, Than, or Stephan to show up to a tournament with GoT beers, DVDs, toys, etc to give away. We really have a great group.
So we talked about the top ten decks of all time. Which did we miss, which should not have been on the list?
Darknoj likes his own post.
someone has too
Alex asked me to post my opinions on the best decks of all time here before listening to the cast so I can see how much agreement/disagreement there is. To avoid confusion I focused my list entirely on Joust, then also provided my top 5 for Melee as a compromise.
How many Spanish players did you mention in the top decks section?
Drakey, the Spanish players running that SoW you refer are Humber and Kralicht.
Really nice podcast, enjoyed it a lot seeing almost all history of the game through decks.
I love Lauren's achievements poster, I might take that idea for our local meta.

First and foremost, Lauren #hype! Great segment with her. All of the insights there seem spot on to me. As a newer player (since last August) these were the sort of things that drew me into the NYC meta and kept me there.
One thing I would add is that you want to make sure you have group building thing with the meta/guests after tournaments. After NYC events we usually go out for dinner/drinks with the meta and other visiting players. After that we usually go to karaoke* or something similar. Such events give people a chance to meet their metamates's spouses/partners/dates and get to know each other as more than just someone you sit across the table from to play cards. It builds stories and deepens friendships. Some of my best friends in NYC are my metamates, thanks to those sort of post-event shenanigans.
On to top ten decks! In no particularly order:
---
*This has a lot to do with Aaron's (PulseGlazer's influence).
You jest, but one of those actually made the discussion.
Indeed! Thanks for supplying the details for my somewhat
deprecateddecrepit memory.NYC karaoke will get you every time. Sandy and I cannot go out together anymore as a result.

Thanks for the advice building a meta.
I really like the Achievement-poster, I think it is an interesting method to get a) more people into the game and
keep them interested, so that the meta don't become stale.
My playgroup has the problem, that we are playing in a pub, which is great as a location, but we are struggling to get new players into the game. There is no accidental bypassing of other gamers which might get interested. So the only way is to do it digitally, to invite people etc. But for some there is just a huge step to overcome to physically move to an unknown location to meet with strangers (while in a store they might come regularly anyway).
I've only been playing since 2013 and I was pretty terrible for the beginning part of that. Here are my 10 best decks for the last 2 years (in any order):
Lanni NA
Bara KotHH
Targ KotHH
Stark NA
Quentyn
HoD Maiden's Bane
Bloodthirst
Bara TMP
Martatheon Rush
Bara Knights (when you could have FoW and Favor)
One negative about pubs, is that they are often not actually conducive to playing.
Our local Cambridge restaurant has decent sized tables, but the pubs I've played in in NYC had terribly small tables that made playing awkward. Also, pubs often have poor lighting...and they are often loud. All not great conditions to playing.
I really enjoy going to the pub after our events at the store...but I prefer the games themselves be in a location that is a bit more...professional...which you get in the store environment.
Dave Stromes beat me in a pub. Therefore I blame the pub.
I had a ridiculous Lanni KotHH a couple years ago, just before Rivers. Glazer had a very similar one, if I recall. Hoping that is the one that made the discussion! (Obviously haven't listened yet).
Of my joust lists it seems like only Greyjoy TMP wasn't alluded to at least a little bit. I'll freely admit to bias on that one, but I wanted to recognise the Maester's Path without it taking over half the list, and for me the strongest build for a meta that existed was the one Stefano took Stahleck 2012 with - especially impressive since Targ KotHH burn had just exploded onto the scene via John Bruno, AND Stark Winter Meera Reed aggro was everywhere in that time period. Two of that deck's three hardest counters (third being Ghaston Grey) were arguably the top two decks in the meta, and yet Greyjoy Maesters still dominated that tournament (I think 7 people took it and 5 of them made the cut, in a field of 130 people?). I wrote-up an interview with Stefano about that deck that you can find in part two of this article (and sadly his decklist is lost to the sands of time by virtue of Wolfgang's website issues...).
Otherwise it seems we were surprisingly on the same page, for the most part!
As a new player, just wanted to say I appreciate the tips for new players. A great tip this week - simple and very useful. Thanks!
Glad to hear it! It also works for those times you have most of your plots picked, but just aren't sure what goes in that 6th/7th slot.
We'll try to consistently put in a tip every week, and keep them short and sweet.
