Crimson and Gold - Sailing into Tournament Season

Small Council Crimson and Gold scantrell24

Now that store championships are rolling along, let’s analyze the early results. After that we’ll break down the strengths and weaknesses of Lanni Black Sails.

Meta Talk

Despite the recent introduction of house-specific agendas for Martell, Baratheon and Greyjoy, the meta hasn’t changed much since November. Most Bloodthirst decks follow the same tried-and-true Martell KotHH archetype, with low character counts and influence events. A Noble Cause legitimized the rush archetype, but numerous counters such as Men of Pride make it ultimately unreliable. And The Old Way hasn’t made an impact at all, perhaps because Greyjoy is a middle-tier House right now and because the Krakens have stronger alternative agendas.

As you can see for yourself from the excellent spreadsheet put together by istaril, the top three decks in the joust format are still Targ KotHH, Bara KotHH, and Lanni No Agenda, but they’re followed closely by a wide variety of competitors.

Martell has several strong options including KotHH, Bloodthirst, Quentyn and Knights of the Realm. Baratheon Black Sails is strong against almost everything, while Bara Knights and A Noble Cause are flashier but more matchup dependent. Lanni PBtT is making the cut at a surprisingly high rate, but Tunnels is quiet. Greyjoy No Agenda, Black Sails and A Song of Ice are all viable but not especially impressive. Targaryen House of Dreams (either Dragonpit or Aegon’s Hill) and No Agenda (Dothraki) have made respectable showings. And finally, House Stark shows up at the bottom of the standings, but their best bet seems to be No Agenda (either Kindly Man or Maege Mormont) followed by House of Dreams (Harrenhal or Bear Island). Beyond that, you might encounter an occasional Maester, Wildling, Song of Fire, Brotherhood or Siege deck. And that’s the current meta in a nutshell.

Lannister Black Sails

The versatility of Black Sails allows us to run cards that are situational in nature, and fetch them only when the time is right. However, in a meta dominated by control decks and constant resets, keeping our characters with naval enhancements around is not easy. At best we’ll probably access the Hold twice per game, so honestly Lanni Agenda is stronger, but sometimes it’s good to mix things up and, you know, have fun with this game. Try something different and challenge yourself.

In my last article, Know Your Enemy, we covered some of the biggest obstacles stopping Lannister enthusiasts from taking the Iron Throne. Now let’s face those fears and confront them.

Carrion Birds are cheap anti-Seasons tech. Lady of the Leaves brings repeatable blanking to the table. Coldhands, Ygritte, Varys and Ser Arys Oakheart should need no explanation – they’re simple “point and click” removal. Ser Mandon Moore stops those dirty Greyjoy saves. Jhalabor Xho and Slander and Lies slow down renown-heavy decks. Milk of the Poppy handles the Red Viper along with a host of other nuisances. Bastard is always there if and when Maesters make a comeback. Paper Shield and The Hand’s Judgement are great for when you fear a game-breaking event. If your opponent runs a host of shadows cards, you can fetch Jaime Lannister or Alchemist’s Guild Hall to punish him. And finally, opposing influence-heavy decks with the Red Keep are vulnerable to Support of the Kingdom.

Can you think of any other reasons to run Black Sails?

How Can We Reliably Win Naval Challenges?

Even if Lannister is short on naval enhanced characters, thankfully there a couple of solid neutral options in Eastwatch Envoy and Summer Sea Corsair. In-house, I’m fond of Arbor Guardsman and Fleet from the Arbor, but Blackwater Bay Veteran and Paxter Redwyne are so mediocre that I don’t even bother with them. Lannister is home to excellent cheap characters capable of getting the party started, so to speak, for our naval characters to jump in. House Clegane Outlaw is my favorite option: all three icons, survives Threat from the North, and can initiate a challenge even without a power token on him.

I chose Castellan as the restricted card because he works well with Arbor Guardsman, but there are plenty of other options, including Narrow Escape, Threat from the East, Negotiations and Cache. The Bear and the Maiden Fair works great with Fleet from the Arbor. I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions. Thanks for reading!

In my opinion as an experianced Lannister player, i`ll like to say that this deck will probably not work under the blacksails agenda. 10 naval enh, in 40 char is almost nothing. If your enh are stuck in the hold, you will probably lose 100%. 10 out of 74 is too low.
Additionally, I think Lannister has to run bad ass Characters that are pure value. Either by producing resource value (Gold, Draw; such as Tommen or the gold weenies, Jaime) or by dominating the challenges (like Brigands, Castellan, Margaery, Tywin, Cersei, Tyrion, Littlefinger). Those slots can be filled up by hybrids (Janos Slynt) and then you just have to roiund out the gold curve.

In the above deck, you include underwhelming chars like Eastwatch Envoy or Clegane Outlaw just to be able to trigger the agende. In not a few cases you have to overcommit to win a naval challenge, which, in a way, is kind of card-disadvantage to fetch a card you cannot use immediately. Most Lannister cards are best if the have a sudden impact.

Wouldn't it be better to just reach draw cap as fast as possible and go with the Lannister old way (no agenda or Tunnels)? Yeah, BS is a lot of fun, and as you said you wanted to build a fun deck. But I wonder if it will have impact in larger tournaments... And you talked about sailing into tournament season...
SerJaime -

You just described a black sails deck.

Crimson and Gold is about expanding House Lannister. Not all the decks posted or rundown are going to be T1. Don't take the title of the article so literally. Its an intended pun.

Perhaps I should have been more clear: Lanni Black Sails is not Tier 1. It will not win any significant store championships. But it's a nice change of pace in a stale meta that hasn't seen an FAQ since before Worlds. It's great for League Nights and friendly games, or if you want to try something different to challenge yourself. And it's still a Lannister deck, so the Pentoshi Manor / Iron Throne / GTM trio covers up a lot of other deficiencies.

Also, I meant to plug the Atlanta, GA area store championship taking place on March 15th at the Raven's Nest in Marietta. PM me if you're interested.
Ok :D
Have you played the deck already? Because I also tried to build a Lanni BS deck... but I wasn't fine with any solutions cause of my above mentioned reasons. And I think it wouldn't be so much fun if you struggle all game long to win naval challenges and keep enough strength for the rest of the phase. That's why I never played it.

If I am wrong, please correct me ;) I'm eager to read of your experiences

I've played five or six games with this list. Just think of the Agenda trigger as a bonus and not a necessity. It's entirely possible to win without ever searching your hold (other than with the Naval Reinforcement plot).

Well. That does not sound like you need the agenda and agendaless decks have a plot to search for a character as well.
Just because it's possible doesn't mean the agenda isn't helpful.

What I'm surprised about is no Dagger Lake Galley. That alone mitigates any lack of naval character presence as it turns unique characters into potential agenda triggers.

DLG was in an earlier draft, but it's just so 'meh', and I had already included too many other cards like the Outlaw that help trigger the agenda. It's certainly a reasonable choice though.
I like this a lot Scantrell. I was making a deck just today with similar characters, locations, & events, before looking at this idea, that was not BS, & now you have confided me that it's MUCH better as a BS deck. Thanks!

Wow, I'm very surprised you found it to be 'meh'. Dynamic naval enhancements just feel like they'd work pretty well for Black Sails. I know I don't need to mention why because I know you have tried using them already, but Lanni does have less than ideal Naval characters so it would be nice to have any unique character as an option.

Also, have you considered Aurane Waters? How about Battle for Shield Islands? The epic event can allow you to search your hold two times in that round, and with any naval characters under your control, you shouldn't have any problem winning those challenges.
I've played against a pretty damn good Lannister BS deck, and this is quite similar. I would go with Dagger Lake Galley definitely, and the Deadly fleets do a lot of the work here. Using Mags Tyrell to kneel in an opponent followed by the fleet on Naval pretty much guarantees the agenda gets triggered, or the other option is to attack with a Brothel Guard, naval in the fleet, then stand the guard to try & kneel a character. At worst, you'll gain a power but probably still get something from the hold.

They're pretty much the best fleet in the game, and make this deck quite viable.

@GameOfPwns - glad you liked the article.

@Bomb - I'll give those cards a chance, but it might have to wait a few weeks until after my Store Championship. Stealing a Red Keep with the epic battle would be spectacular.

@cockbongo - I can't believe I forgot to mention the Brothel Guard / Fleet combo. Thanks for bringing that up.
