Crimson and Gold - The New FAQ

Small Council Crimson and Gold scantrell24

Almost every Lannister deck should include 3x Pentoshi Manor (AHM). It's cheap, repeatable, and becomes even more effective with additional copies in play. Some players still overlook that it not only reduces strength but also strips keywords, which, it turns out, are rather important. I'm pleasantly surprised by FFG's sudden generosity towards House Lannister; however, Pentoshi Manor's return could be a double-edged sword if Targ Burn decks use it out-of-house by either paying the gold penalty or using Supported by the Smith (AJE) to cheat the Manor into play.

FFG also announced that the upcoming Kingsguard chapter pack is legal for Worlds. So far about half of the pack is spoiled online, and although there’s not yet a Lannister card revealed, some neutral characters like Ser Preston Greenfield and Jaime Lannister slot right into Tunnels of the Red Keep (CoS) decks. In fact, with Tunnels and The Dragonpit (TftRK) both strong in the current meta, I wouldn’t be surprised to see counters like The King's Law (KotStorm), Maester Pylos (KotStorm) and Shadow Enchantress (OSaS).

No Quarter (TBC), Bear Island (AE) and Aegon's Hill (TTotH) were also un-restricted, so burn and murder decks are back on the rise (if they were ever down). Both pose major problems for Lannister, but there are counters available. Widow's Wail (LotR) boosts a character’s strength, making it both harder to burn, and characters with attachments are immune to Bear Island. The Iron Throne (LotR), already a Lannister staple, might deserve two copies now because it shuts down King's Landing Assassin (SaS), Dragon Thief (AE) (bane of Pyromancer's Cache (TWot5K)), Wintertime Marauders (ACoS), and Maester Luwin (FtC) (who can fetch No Quarter). A House Divided (WLL) nails Targ’s Allies like Pyat Pree (QoD) and Magister Illyrio (VM), or their Dothraki (viable thanks to Dothraki Vanguard (FaI)), but is less useful against Stark; their characters tend to have only a single Trait, which makes finding common traits difficult. Another way to combat burn is to include characters with a high strength-to-cost ratio. Unfortunately, Lannister only has a few options in that department, like Ser Lancel Lannister (TPoL) and King's Landing Guard (FaI).

Commentary

House Lannister seems like a natural fit for A Song of Fire because it can easily take advantage of the increased draw cap. I’d be more enthused if Tommen Baratheon weren’t the only new Lannister Summer card, but Tommen and The Kingsroad might be enough to trump the opportunity cost of running a different agenda (or no agenda).

For draw there’s, Gilly, Samwell, Doubting Septa, The Kingsroad, Golden Tooth Mines and Pyromancer’s Cache. I’m considering dropping the Cache for a different restricted card (either Retaliation! (ASoSilence), Search and Detain (HtS), Negotiations at the Great Sept (TPoL), or Castellan of the Rock (BoRF)) and then adding Bay of Ice (KotS), Insidious Ways (Core), or shadows Jaime to round out the draw engine. With a 4-card draw cap the Cache can do serious work, but it’s extremely vulnerable in an environment with Rally Cry (TBG), A City Besieged (CD) and other location control running rampant.

The deck is mostly standard Lannister control, but the Season mechanic does introduce a few quirks. You’ll have to watch out for crafty player opening turn 1 with Rule by Decree (Core) – if timed against your Time for Ravens, they can make the Raven-search resolve fist so you’ll have 8 cards in hand to their 7… and then drop to 4 when RBD resolves. Also, the Black Raven unfortunately helps our opponent on occasion – Dragon Knight (TBC), for example, becomes a monster. On the bright side, Summer-Tommen turns off other Kings like Stannis Baratheon (VM), Robert Baratheon (KotS) and even Tommen Baratheon (SA) yet still works just fine himself. I’m still fine tuning the resource curve, but we might need less locations thanks to the Black Raven’s gold bonus.

A few cards that just missed the cut include Rally Cry (TBG), Forgotten Plans (KotStorm), Shadows and Spiders (LotR), Penny (VD), Chella, Daughter of Cheyk (Core), Tyrion Lannister (CoS), Ser Gregor Clegane (WLL), The Inn of the Kneeling Man (FtC), Volantis Inn (AHM), Lannisport Tourney Grounds (ODG), Widow's Wail (LotR), Nightmares (LoW), Paper Shield (QoD), The Only Game that Matters (LotR), Green Dream (FaI) and Summer Reserves (SA).

Shameless Plugs

If you haven't already, take a look at the AGoT New Player Thread and share it with any rookies just getting their feet wet. I'm always looking to improve the thread, so if you have a resource that should be added, or if there's an aspect of Thrones that deserves an explanation, please let me know. Thanks.

Also, my meta-mates have backed out of Worlds for various reasons, but I'm still attending. If anyone wants to share a hotel room Friday and Saturday evening I'd be grateful.

Thanks for reading!

A House Divided doesn't hurt Dothraki practically at all because it doesn't work against ambushed characters, nor any put into play effects. That is its big downside right now, which to me warrants finding other means to combat them. (If the FAQ changed this, I didn't see it, but I can't imagine they would have.)
+ 1 to Wolfgang.

A few comments/questions:

26 characters seems too little to me, even more considering 2 copies of Samwell and 2 of Tommen, that means very little "fire power". I know its a control deck but my first impression is that eventually, that may end being problematic.

I know this is a little thematic trying to use the new cards, but I sincerely doubt that now, without any other summer lanni cards, it could replace no agenda decks.

Well, thats about it. Cool deck, I'll try it, or at least something similar and we'll see how it works!

Ummm... there's like two dothraki that have ambush, and they only "come into play" through the Vangaurd. AHD nails Khal Drogo, Jhogo, Aggo, Rhakaro, Screamers, etc.

Yeah, I agree, although keep in mind that the 2x Enslaved are essentially characters. Any suggestions regarding what characters to add?

You'll never know unless you try, but yeah, No Agenda and Tunnels are most likely better.
Pyromancer's Caches might be too much for draw like you mentioned on getting rid of them and they would free the slot for castellans. I did some Summer Lannister tries with same kind of draw setup as you and noticed that often the Caches weren't that useful.

Personally I think if you are making Lannister Summer the best bet is to go the really old styled all out hyper kneel. Since you draw a lot you will be getting more kneel effects going as well.
I find that in draw heavy Lannister decks running pyromancer's cache, fewer than 30 characters works. Your drawing so many cards that you're drawing plenty of characters.

I will try it! It still seems cool and Lanni players should innovate more to keep up with the game, so yeah. If I have anything interesting to say after testing it, I'll let you know XD
I think this style of deck deserves a revisit with the inclusion of the new Kingsguard insanity. Lannister is a natural fit for these guys since shadows runs off of Gold, Lanni already has some of the best other shadows cards anyways, and KG Jaime provides another nuts card draw engine to work off of - enough that you could probably drop the Caches and make room for a different restricted card (maybe Castellan?).

However, I think the fly in the ointment here is that Lanni simply doesn't have enough cards that operate off of Summer. My personal take on the new Seasons agendas is that the main reason you'd run them is that they enable Green Dreams, which then lets you splash in a small number of big-impact seasonal cards that you can reliably get into hand. Lanni has basically no such cards, which is why you aren't even running Green Dream. You could consider going OOH for some of the Summer locations found elsewhere. Summer Encampment, Slaver's Bay, and Open Market are all solid Summer cards with powerful effects - Summer Encampment can be especially nasty if you have a good number of comes into play effects on characters. Reusing King Joffrey's Guard, or Qyburn, or Varys, or Enemy Informer - all good things.
