Beyond the Wall, Season 2 Episode 38

Podcast Istaril darknoj Vaapad Twn2dn New Player Mistakes AGOT2.0 Beyond the Wall

We finally did it! We brought our podcast down to it's intended length. Almost. So close. After introducing our week's news - mostly the Stahleck debacle and some Thrones we've played, Darknoj abandons me for sunnier pastures. I bring on the reinforcements, Dave S. (Vaapad) and Dan S. (Twn2dn) to turn our 2.0 'tip of the week' into a full segment: Tactical mistakes new players make. We break down common play mistakes by phase. Darknoj rejoins me for the closing comments, in which we cast our minds forward to Halloween weekend.

Not sure why you picked Dan and Dave to cast on this topic--those guys never make mistakes!

Dan doesn't make many; I make more than enough for both of us though!

Dan and Dave! <3 - the NY takeover.

Dave is, of course, very modest. Separately, after listening to this I realized that I really hogged the mic. Alex should have cut me off (or edited me out) a couple of times when I rambled :P

You actually listed nearly all mistakes I do. Especially the transition from 1.0 to 2.0 shouldn't be underestimated, as the reactions before claim and reserve value are so easily missed while having a huge impact.

Some more favorite mistakes:

- Not placing duplicates in setup

- Not placing attachments on chuds in setup although they can be bounced to hand and attached again later

- Screwing up the order of playing limited cards

- Miscalculating by 1 gold in marshalling, just to realize in challenge phase that you forgot your Fealty-Agenda...

I think the hardest part at the moment is the limbo of playing 1.0 and 2.0 at the same time. Most things will be settle at a later stage when focusing on 1.0 ( at least I hope so)...

This episode is really, really great. It is good to have this amount of collective wisdom in one easy place to point new players towards. I am proud to have made so many of these mistakes, when playing against Dave and Dan, to create so much fodder for this discussion. ;)

Thanks again to Jon and Alex for promoting our upcoming NYC tournament! Anyone who is in the greater New York area should come out - and even folks further afield. It will be great time. I may even have a prize for the person who travels the furthest.

Dan is a great player, but he is also a really nice guy. My first memory of meeting him is at Thronestoberfest (or maybe Red Saturday) 2013. I was a very new player who decided it would be a good idea to take Martell Maesters to a tournament. I had no idea what I was doing. I had just finished up a grinder of a game against your other guest (who tormented us all day with Bara KotHH and received a world record number of modified results) when I sat down across from Dan. We shuffled, laid out our set ups, and flipped our first plots. Outwit! WTF! Dan kindly let me switch to At the Gates (in a tournament!) because obviously I had physically grabbed the wrong plot. He still won :)

Ha - yeah I think I went 5-0 in Swiss with 4 mod wins :). Bara Kothh before it was cool! (Or refined)!

~ I disagree with Lauren.  Dan is a jerk for calling my Varys bluff in our Nationals Top 16 game.

@Chris. Lol, I thought it was fun of you to attempt that. It's just much more difficult to bluff when I've been looking at your hand each round with Aegon's Hill. I have no doubt that was working for you in your other matches though ;)

@Lauren. That was a fun game I still remember. That's how Red Saturday is though... very competitive players with competitive decks, but still very friendly and welcoming of new players. It's one of my favorite tournaments each year for the friendly atmosphere and social scene, though of course I'm a little biased. You and Britt are coming down this year, right?

Enjoyed the podcast. I like all the primers coming out for 2.0 players

Hey guys, what is the time stamp for the start of the 2.0 strategy and mistake talk. Limited time to listen and need to cram :)

Thanks

The podcast has built in segmments, so you can skip ahead to the chapter called "Tip of the Week: Extended" with any player that supports enhanced podcasts (or, if you're just eyeballing it or streaming it in certain browsers, look for when the artwork displayed changes).

In this case, skipping won't change much, as it's the only segment. It runs from 14:35 - 58:56.

Of course! We've had a great time the last 2 years.

Thanks for the time stamp and relevant info guys.

At the beginning of the show you shortly mention a big AGOT 2ndEd Tournament in France. Where can I find out more about it?

In the intro, we go over results from the week - although as they aren't terrible informative in the early days of 2.0, we've been easing up on this. The tournament, as I corrected Darknoj, was in fact in Barcelona (Spain). The full results can be found here, in the annals, or on the Barcelona site "guardia de la noche".

If you're interested in the tournament scene in France, they maintain very active boards here, at Trone de Fer JCE. France probably has the most organized tournament scene in the world.

So sad that some countries still haven't switched over to English for those who are not from Canada and spreak French :(
