Beyond the Wall, Season 2 Episode 40

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Jakob H. Seth L. Andreas A. Ryan J. Worlds 2015

Worlds! First, we round up the news from Worlds, then round up champions to talk about their experience. Because of the rapid turnover for this episode (and guest list), we're breaking down our Worlds coverage into two parts - this week's episode we focus primarily on the 1st Edition. We start off with Draft, joined by Champion Ryan J., then Joust, joined by champion Jakob H., and finally Melee, joined by finalists Andreas A. and Seth L. It turns out there's a little controversy around this years Melee, surprising no one. We then jump to a Tip of the Week, and sign off with some closing comments and information about next week's 2nd edition-centric episode.

Errata:
-While we will definitely be mentioning them both in the 2.0 episode, I feel bad for having failed to mention Rob St John's youtube channel, which you should keep an eye on for 2.0 games as he gets them uploaded, and the *superb* commentary by Evan J. and Mark for the 2nd edition games.
-Ryan was not the first person to earn two card designs - Corey was, in 2011.

The UK Nationals Melee event used swiss pairings (well, groupings) as well. I think it's a quirk of TOME that needs looking into.

Other Errata; The Great overlord Cory F was the first person to win 2 card designs in the same tournament in 2011,

We should have thanked simoni for his live streams all week. They where great.

Davos had 7 sons....7 Alex. ;)

Can't wait to get home and listen to your latest episode. :)

Impressive lineup of interviews so quickly after worlds. Really fantastic and well done, can't wait for next week!

First, thank you so much for the episode.

In my opinion, watching the last melee table was the highlight of the whole tourney. Especially with all commentary being made experts

Forgotten plans not blanking when revealed effects in the challenge phase? Damn, I have seen forgotten plans being played wrong many times then.
Fp does not blank the castle plot that moves into the used pile, it would blank any when revealed or constant effects of the newly revealed plot.

Yeah, Rivarama - agktmte clarified correctly. FP would make whatever plot he flipped into blank, but would not affect the passive on "Taken Captive" (His revealed plot prior to bringing Arianne out of shadows).

Nate should have stepped in with the ruling on the mandatory passive! #GameStateGate
Got the decklist from Seth just now. He notes that he now feels a NCF should be swapped for a second Brienne.

Interesting deck list. I was asking them about their deck choices and while I understand most of the DC guys hate the blue bird, it did pain me when Seth revealed his Time for Wolves against Jakob's Negotiations and could not cancel it - I think Jakob had 2 cards to Seth's 5? I doubt it would have changed much as the game was pretty much decided on that Valar (and Seth's hand was pretty bad), but still I feel taking out one Carrion Bird for one Raven would not have been a terrible idea. I also know Patriarch does not quite fit in with their theme, but oh man would he have been useful in a final match of DWDW. Easily my most MVP card at world's considering I faced two decks running WWW, a Martell NA with of course Game of Cyvasse, and even a Targ KOTHH with all the usual crazy discard events among others.

Weak cover about the top 16 screwjob on Jakob. Anyone that thinks he had a chance to win is misinformed.

Nice episode for sure, the line-up of interview partners was impressive and I liked a lot to hear their experiences.

Also, thanks a lot for posting the deck. So, DC finally loosening up on their non-disclosure obligation. ;)

1 minor thing: I would actually loved to have Seth and Andreas being simultaneously on the cast. Not for the sake of drama or controversy, but to have a discussion about the different approaches on Melee, which came a bit short in my opinion.

I am really looking forward for part 2, 2nd Edition. :)

I would like to give my opinion very short about my top 16 melee game. Seth is right in saying that he took me aside after the game to explain why he did what he did. Seth pushed the table talk very hard to leave me out of the trading, and pretty much the game. He did it because he was off to a great start and knew that if I was out he would win.

What really upset me about leaving me out was that both Erick and Aaron had no reason whatsoever in agreeing with Seths reasoning, it was obvious that Seth had the advantage. I got really uncomfortable in that situation and it was probably the worst melee experience I have ever had. To me it was soft play from Ericks and Aarons side, and obvious collusion. Once again, I get that Seth came out winning in the situation, and that he rightfully did his best in convincing the others, but explaining that to me afterwards did not help me at all.

Just wanted to make that clear.

It would have great, but as all recording had to be done last minute (on Sunday) with guest schedules, it just wasn't even remotely feasible.

Sure thing. That's why I said "minor". ;)

I am totally glad, that you had such a fresh and full episode, even with the tight schedule!

Maybe I just edit my criticism next time in a small font, so you can't read it. ;)

Oh, don't get me wrong - I appreciate the comment, the honesty, and the intent behind it! I wasn't trying to be defensive at all, just explaining why your (very good) idea just wasn't feasible... this time.

So how is that 2.0 Worlds podcast coming? =)

So how is that 2.0 Worlds podcast coming? =)

Very well! All the interviews wrapped up, should be up on schedule (and slightly less frantically so) on Monday!

A quick note, Ive re-uploaded this episode fixing a glitch where my voice came through two (slightly offset) channels at 3 occasions during the cast.

I know I'm late - but I honestly believe that not having draft set lists available to players is a huge mistake on FFG's part.   I agree with Alex that draft should be about making the most informed choice you can, given what you know about the card pool, and not knowing what's in the card pool is a travesty.
