Beyond the Wall, Season 2 Episode 8

Beyond the Wall Istaril Darknoj Shearer Bruno Metagame Deckbuild Podcast AGOT

This week our episode runs rather long... again. We try and keep the coverage of news fairly brief, but there are a couple notable items including the Regional postings and results out of Batalla por el Muro. We're then, as hinted at last week, joined by Justin S to discuss the current meta, and since a deck idea came up in that chat, we bring on J. Bruno for a deckbuilding segment. The format of this deckbuilding segment is a little different - let us know what you think! Closing comments are omitted.

Errata:
1. Dan beat Dave in the cut, but beat Seth in the finals (against, as I had said, Martell AAA Bannermen). Thanks Pulseglazer
2. Except Pulseglazer was wrong, and it was Corey S. in the finals.
3. Alex confused HCIT with VB, the latter of which doesn't actually need to attach to Martells.

Well Tom likes the deck so that is good.

So, Dan played Dave in round 1 of the cut. Dan won, then beat Shoemaker, D, then beat Seth playing Martell AAA summer with Maesters of the Sun in the finals.

Good episode. Thoughts on the meta was nice, and the deck seems really interesting.

Though I am not sure, what you mean with "a bit different"? You already build decks with guests, even with John.

Only difference seems to be, that the deck actually existed already in two versions, and Alex struggled to not just copy them...

Yeah, the fact that the deck existed already did help speed things up a bit, and also that inclusions had to be defended rather than speculated on changed the tone of discussion quite a bit.

We got to present a bit of a first-instinct approach (mine) counterbalanced by some already-tested reasoning, which made the deck building less speculative/spontaneous/free-form, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage.

Ah, well. As you are already arguing about many parts of a deck (while on the other hand agreeing on staples) when you build a deck the "normal" way, it doesn't felt that different for me. ;)

So, I would say, it wasn't better or worse than usual. This means, go ahead, do both. ;)

@Aaron - was it not Corey S. in the finals?

Choke is the worst thing in the game. Bad Bruno!

Alex: top work on, having been specifically banned from letting the meta discussion revolve around stats, managing to sneak an embedded image of a pie chart in the chapter data.

Cards I wanted to see make the deck but understand why they didn't: Wyk, Great; Docks, Hellholt; Cell, Locked in a.

Did not expect it to get noticed :P. I sneak in things like this every once in a while, for the observant listener (that is an odd statement).

I REALLY want to put Locked in a Cell in this deck too!   (Actually, it is in my version.  I have a couple cards different, and 1 Plot different, in my deck.)  :)
